Strange thing, here's the sequence of events (dates/times from club communications):

  1. Friend posted a book to my account, I accepted, she accepted
  2. 3/9/2017 4:12 PM ET - Friend marked book mailed
  3. 3/11/2017 9:35 AM ET - Same book is offered by another PBS member, not a friend
  4. I double-check WL and RL to see if additional copy there.  Nope.  Sorted both lists by title and author.  Not there.
  5. PM would-be sender and ask about it and she replied that when she posted the book to her shelf my "name came up for a wish list hold."

Normally when a book is even offered, copies go on hold on your WL, right?  So how could this happen?  Is it because the system has been glitchy?  When I looked after the second offer (and the first book being mailed), it wasn't even on my WL.

That's interesting. Somewhat the same thing happened to me the other day. I received a book and two days later it was offered to me again. But I assumed  somehow I must have had a second copy of the the book on my WL.

My WL is usually on auto-request, but the second copy was offered to me. I just canceled the request.

Check the ISBNs on the two transactions. The most likely probability is that you had two different versions of the book on your wish list but they weren't linked in the system, so when the first one was posted, the second one wasn't automatically put on hold. Then the second version was posted a few days later and since you had an active wish for that ISBN, it was offered to you.

Usually the system will link two different books with the same title and author, but sometimes this doesn't happen automatically. When a WL book is posted to you it's a good idea to take a look at your WL and just make sure that anything else with the same title is now on hold.

Cathy, I thought about that, but when I looked at my lists it wasn't there - either sorted by title or author.  Even with the offer, it would still have been on the list with a hold, right?  It's like it was an invisible copy.  Can't check ISBNs now because after PMing second person to ask if she could shed some light on the situation, I clicked the button that I didn't want the book.

Thanks for everyone's input.  I will forward the info to the team.  Seems like I read in one of the threads where duplicates were showing up on people's WL.  Wonder if that was the case here, only with an "invisible" duplicate.

[edit:  screenshots disappeard, trying again]  They won't stay.  frown

Here we go again.  Just looked at the My Account page and saw that I have a WL offer.  However, look at this - even though the product description page says it is on my WL, it says 0 Members Wishing:

Here is my WL, sorted by title.  Notice this book is NOT on my WL in any version:

As a matter of fact, here is the book in my transaction archive - granted under a different ISBN:

I messaged the team earlier about this issue.  Are any of you having this problem?

Lots of my WL books with the same title, but different ISBNs, are not linked.  I have had to be extra vigilant for past 6 months to be sure I don't get a second copy offered to me unless I really want another one.

No, once a book is offered to you, that specific version will no longer appear on your wish list. Only the alternate versions that are linked will remain on your WL on hold. At this point, you have one active transaction on your My Account page, En Route to Me tab for the first book that was mailed and is still en route to you; and there's a second cancelled transaction in your Transaction Archive for the one you said you didn't want. You can see the ISBNs on those two transactions and compare them. If they're different, then the explanation is just that the two versions were not linked and both versions happened to be posted and offered to you within a short period of time. If the ISBNs are the same, then there's something else going on and the team will have to address it.

However, look at this - even though the product description page says it is on my WL, it says 0 Members Wishing:

It says 0 Members Wishing because your wish is no longer active or on hold. It's a fulfilled wish, so you can't see it on your WL; and if another member posts the book now, it will go onto his bookshelf instead of being offered to a wisher. If you accept the WL offer and then the sender cancels, then your fulfilled wish will go back to active status and you'll be able to see it again on your WL. Also the count of people wishing will go up to 1.

The post at 4:52 PM was for another book that this occurred with - book offered but there is no version on WL.  This time I've left it on the offers tab for the team to see.  I think I can post screenshots now to illustrate what's going on.

"Smarty Bones" by Carolyn Haines offered:

My WL sorted by title - NO "Smarty Bones"

WL sorted by author - Carolyn Haines - NO "Smarty Bones"

This is the second book in as many days that this has occured with.  Different titles.  The first was "Where Do I Go?" by Neta Jackson.  There were no copies of it on my WL, either.

Once Smarty Bones was offered to you, it would be removed from your WL. If it was on hold, the book should have skipped over you and you would see it on hold.

Yes, this is exactly what should happen. The system is working correctly.

"Smarty Bones" was on your Wish List. Then it was offered to you. Immediately upon the offer, a transaction was created on your My Account page, and the book was removed from your Wish List because your wish had been fulfilled.

If you had had another version of the book on your WL, e.g. the paperback version, and the system knew the two books were linked, then it would have put the paperback version on hold on your WL when the hardcover was offered and you would be able to see it there in pink.

Please do not wait too long for the team to get back to you on this. If you want this book, you need to accept the offer by 3/14/2017 at 2:24 PM ET. Once the offer passes you by, the team will not be able to restore it for you because the book will have already been offered to the next person on the WL. So if you don't hear from them in time, and you do want the book, you should go ahead and accept the offer.

You guys are right.  I heard back from the team and learned something new.  I thought that when you were offered a book that the book was placed on hold on your WL until you decided yes, no, or not now; however, once a book is offered it is removed from your WL during that period.  I usually try to double-check my lists when I receive a book in case there are additional copies that aren't linked.  I'm guessing the Carolyn Haines book was one at a page break so it wasn't on the first page and when I went to the next, had gotten shuffled to the first.  And, since I haven't received the Neta Jackson (the first occurrence I posted about), I wouldn't have gone through the lists yet.  Looks like I will need to do that and eliminate extras when accepting orders, instead of waiting for them to come.

Thank you all for your insight and help.

Great! I'm glad you got it figured out in time to get the book.

Umm...well, no.  I already had the book which was part of what was puzzling me that it was being offered again, yet no missed duplicates showing on WL.  I left the offer until I heard back from the team in case they had to investigate.  They did and was able to cancel before deadline.  Also, sent the nice would-be sender an apology and let her know why I was cancelling.

Thanks, though, Cathy!  Was glad to find out what was going on:  books go in limbo instead of hold during offer period.
