My impression of the Sellout so far.
I am reading this, because it just won the 2017 Man Booker award and my bookclub chose it. It is a parody of race in America, written by an African-American satirist. So, our hero is a teenage pothead, African-American male from a ghetto in LA. He grows up with his father, a sociology professor, who treats his as a sociology experiment, complete with electric shocks self-administered.
He is looking to create a way to stir up Black pride and upward mobility. He comes across a great idea. He will own a slave, who happens to be the last surviving Little Rascal, an elderly black man living in LA. He also leads a successful campaign to segregate his high school.
He is arrested for slavery and his case goes to the Supreme Court, here he sits in the green room and has the guards light up his potpipe for him. High on wee, he begins his trial.
If you love to read the ramblings of a 15 year old pothead,hallucinating about the Supreme Court, here is your golden opportunity..I will say that the book is occasionally funny, but it is also sophomoric and in bad need of an editor.
