Kurt Austin must find a precious artifact aboard the Andrea Doria. Okay, suspend belief for a little while-it's a good book for the adventurous minded reader! As usual the sites are all over- Texas, Mexico, Guatemala and a few I've probably forgotten.
Clive Cussler has created a new bunch of NUMA supersleuths !!!!! From the back of the book - "When Kurt Austin, the leader of a courageous NUMA exploration team, rescues beautiful marine archaeologist Nina Kirov off the coast of Morocco, he becomes the next target of Texas industrialist Don Halcon. A madman bent on carving a new nation out of the southwestern United States and Mexico, Halcon's scheme hinges on Nina's recent discovery involving Christopher Columbus, and a priceless pre-Columbian antiquity buried in the battered remains of the sunken Italian luxury liner Andrea Doria." From me: With the introduction of a new "hero" Kurt Austin, many of Cussler's old fans may go into mourning for their old hero "Dirk Pitt". Steady-On old fans, if you are uncomfortable with this new guy, just substitute "Dirk" for "Kurt" and you'll find that this one is worth your time. As with all Cussler's books, reading this one will not increase your IQ! But, if you have that inner adventurous spirit, and want several hours of pure escapism and loads of fun (now, be honest, isn't that the real reason you read Clive Cussler books?) - read this one!Just remember - Kurt Austin is really Dirk Pitt in disguise (not really, but it will sooth the "Pitt" fans.) Enjoy the book - I did immensely!
This is a seriously convoluted tale revolving around the Spanish mafia from Christopher Columbus's time and the Mayan culture. Two things that really shouldn't have anything to do with each other. Did Columbus really discover America? That is the ultimate question and if not, who did? And why are archeologists being killed when they find certain types of artifacts. A skillfully woven tale that is wholly believeable. The death defying adventures, the life threatening artifact thieves and the underwater (of course) adventures. Just a wonderful roller coaster of a ride. Kurt Austin and Joe Zavala are great characters who really can think on their feet...er, flippers.
On the bottom of the icy sea off Nantucket lie the battered remains of the Italian luxury liner, Andrea Doria. But few know that within its bowels rests a priceless pre-Columbian antiquity--a treasure that now holds the key to a puzzle that is costing people their lives.
For Kurt Austin, the leader of a courageous National Underwater Marine Agency (NUMA) exploration team, the killing begins when he makes a daring rescue of a beautiful marine archeologist. The target of a powerful Texas industrialist named Halcon, Nina Kirov was attacked off the coast of Morocco after her discovery of a carved stone head that may prove Christopher Columbus was not the first European to discover America. Soon Kurt and Nina embark on a deadly mission to uncover Halcon's masterful plan-an insidious scheme that would have him carve out a new nation from the southwest United States and Mexico, and ride to power on a wave of death and destruction.
With Austin's elite NUMA crew attacking the murderous conspiracy, an extraordinary truth emerges: that Columbus may have made a fiftn, unknown voyage to America in search of a magnificent treasure. And that the silent, steel hull of the Andrea Doria not only holds the answer to what the explorer may have found--but the fate of the United States itself.
Great adventure yarn!
