Luise Amberley had been scarred by love, and she was not looking for romance when she left London for a brief stay in Majorca. But then neither had she reckoned on meeting Otto Winter, a tall resplendent Dane, whose masculine force and charm prove irresistible. There is something vague and elusive about his circumstances, but caught up in the overwhelming passion of their sudden love, Luise agrees to marry him at the small and remote seaside resort in Denmark where he has taken her.

During their honeymoon Luise makes discoveries about her handsome and ardent Dane, but her concern turns to deep bewilderment when they arrive at Maaneborg--Moon Castle, the Winthers' ancestral estate--and Otto insists that she conceal their marriage until she has won over the various members of his family.

In the tense hours that follow, as Luise roams the stately gardens and gloomy passageways of the huge and lonely castle, she begins to sense the family's strange and growing hostility toward her. And then comes the accident, and the terror...

"The Shadow Wife" is Dorothy Eden's most powerful novel of romance and suspense. What begins as an exuberant and thrilling love story of two people rediscovering, through each other, all the savor and excitement of life gradually transforms itself into unfathomable mystery. the scene--Moon Castle and its dreamlike atmosphere--is brought to haunting life as the dark and tragic secrets it harbors slowly reveal themselves, layer by layer, until the brave and spirited young woman who had begun by fighting for her marriage rights eventually must fight for sanity itself.
