Helpful Score: 1
This long historical novel, set during the French and Indian War, can be confusing at times, with its long cast of characters, frequent use of French and various native American languages, and a plot as convoluted as the political, social, and military situation of the era. But the characters are excellently drawn, and the story carries the reader on an exciting journey through dark and difficult times, times that set the stage for the eventual formation of the United Sates.

The book has wonderful details on the war, though it is difficult to keep up with all the characters. It's a great story about two powerful men and how history is shaped around them.
