I am interested in getting ideas of different children's books - there are just so many out there that I'm sure I've never heard of and that my children would love.  What a better way to get ideas than for us to share our favorites with each other.  Please post here books that your children like - especially if they are younger children (5 & under).

My children are 2 1/2 years old and 2 months. . . .

For February:

  1. My Very First Book of Shapes by Eric Carle
  2. My Very First Book of Numbers by Eric Carle
  3. The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
  4. Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See by Eric Carle
  5. I Spy I Like to Read Phonics Fun by Jean Marzollo
  6. How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Suess
  7. Green Eggs & Ham by Dr. Suess
  8. There's a Wocket in my Pocket by Dr. Suess
  9. Hop on Pop by Dr. Suess
  10. Robert the Rose Horse by Joan Heilbroner  (really cute book!)
  11. Ten Little Fish by Audrey & Bruce Wood
  12. My First Book of Things That Go by Castle Street Press
  13. Good Morning, Good Night! by Melanie Mitchell
  14. Let's Go to the Farm  (Fisher Price Little People) by Reader's Digest

I operate a daycare and we've always loved the Eric Carle books. But our recent favorite author is Mo Willems, especially his Pigeon books and his Piggie and Elephant books. We LOVE them!! His new Dinosaur book is cute too but some of the humor in it reaches a bit above that age group.

A book my kids and neices and nephews loved is Ten in the Bed by Penny Dale. There are different versions of this out there but this one has a really sweet story with it

Also, there is a curriculum called Before Five in a Row for ages 2-4.  The author tried to pick out the best children's iiterature available so if you google Before Five in a Row book list you can see these titles.

Have fun reading with them.  The time goes so fast!

Also, the Richard Scarry books.  Especailly the classic oversized books.  These are great for building vocab. and having conversations with the kids.

Anything by Mo Willems.  As they get older (closer to K) we've found the Fancy Nancy series.

At those ages my kids loved lift the flap and pop up books the most.  Some favorites:

The "Snappy Little" series of pop-up books (Snappy Little Colors, Snappy Little Numbers)

Philadelphia Chickens by Sandra Boynton(book & CD) - there are lots of little board books with individual songs

Mouse Paint by Elln Stoll Walsh

Ten Little Ladybugs

Wheels on the Bus by Paul O. Zelinsky

Zin, Zin, Zin, A Violin by Lloyd Moss

Mouse House

The Real Mother Goose (or, really, any mother goose or nursery rhyme book)

Lift-the-flap Catholic Bible (doesn't need to be Catholic, but lift the flap is essential)

Thanks so much for the suggestions.  My son loves the Snappy books - we have a little collection of them.  :-)  He also loves the Ten Little Ladybugs.  :-D  Thanks for all the other suggestions.  My son right now (2 year old) is huge into lift-the-flap.  The flaps just fascinate him!

This was my children's favorite lift a flap book:

http://www.paperbackswap.com/Little-Critter-Wheres-Mercer-Mayer/book/1402768060/

We made the animal sounds on each page. We read it over and over and over again :-)

Other favorites were

Goodnight Moon

The book with the spider by Eric Carle (the board book has raised printing for the spider web and my son loved touching it)

Pat the Bunny

Glad I stumbled across this. We are always looking for new books. My daughter just turned three and has been a little bookworm since she was a tiny baby. I recently started sharing a few of our favorites on my blog. I select a certain theme and then pick out our most read books to recommend. I also write a little description for each book. So far I've posted our favorite Halloween books, pirate books and sing-along books. Here's a link if you would like to check out what we came up with.

I'll definitely be looking up some of the ones above. Thanks for sharing!!!!
