Shelter in the Time of a Storm: Sermons of Inspiration and Healing from the Book of Romans
Shelter in the Time of a Storm Sermons of Inspiration and Healing from the Book of Romans Author:L. H. Whelchel Preface — My ministry and professional career has truly been a family affair because the whole family has contributed. This work in particular was initiated by my son Noel. My lovely wife, Dr. Larma Ford-Whelchel, is truly a "virtuous wife and her worth is far above rubies." Also, I am blessed with a second son, Love III, who is married to Quanda... more », and they recently made me and my wife proud grandparents with the birth of Love IV. In addition to our sons, we have two daughters, Kenyatta, who lives in Atlanta, and April Reddick, who lives with her husband in Washington, DC.
The cadres of sermons in this book have been preached in cities, towns and hamlets across America. For the most part, they were prepared for churches I served in Haverhill, Massachusetts; Westerly, Rhode Island; Birmingham, Alabama; Durham, North Carolina; Dayton, Ohio; and Los Angeles, California. The regimentation of preparing sermons week after week for the same audience is a daunting and awesome challenge. I took my pulpit work seriously. I felt it was my responsibility as a pastor at least to make a valiant effort to prepare sermons worthy of people getting out of their beds, putting on clothes, getting in their automobiles, burning gas and driving to church on Sunday morning. Like a bird dog tracking down prey, I was always - 24/7 - looking for sermon material.
Therefore, these sermons reflect a plethora of various people, places and things. I owe every teacher, including my parents and grandparents, who were my best teachers, the authors of every book I have read, every church I have served and every sermon I have ever heard preached.
Storms are a part of living. None of us are immune from the hurricanes and tsunamis of life. In some small way, I hope that these messages of inspiration and healing will be an anchor of hope for those on the brink of despair.
