What does that really mean? Does that mean literally the label was created but not mailed? If you see that for awhile (over a month) than acceptance, etc does that mean the label was created but someone actually mailed it on the acceptance date? Can someone say see? here's the shipping created label date (9/29) so that's the date you go by or do you go by accepance 10/1?

When it says acceptance, that means it was scanned by a post office employee. Thats the date I go by.

Shipping Label Created

Does that mean literally the label was created but not mailed?

Yes,  I often buy postage the day before and mail next day from my mailbox.  That evening the PO scans the package "accepted".

Here's an example below, I bought postage on 9/29/15 and mailed 9/30/15.

If I'm going to mail next day, I change the date to "tomorrow" on PayPal.  I do this because USPS wants you to use the postage the same day as dated on the package.  My mailcarrier shows up at different times everyday which makes buying postage and mailing same day tricky for me.

I have a WL book in which the label was created on 9/15. The sender marked it mailed on 9/20. However, this is the tracking info:

Delivery Confirmation Events

USPS DC#: 9449010200817020720918

  • 9/15/2015 10:38 PM - Electronic Shipping Info Received - AUSTIN,TX

That's it. I even double checked it on the USP.com website. So in this case the label was created but it doesn't look like the book was ever actually mailed. sad

I haven't PMd the sender yet. If there are no scans before the book goes lost I will. I'm totally fine with it if it was mailed late--would just like to know so I don't end up with 2 copies.

It means it was created.

But lack of scans after it doesn't really indicate anything. Many books aren't scanned accepted and the next scan is somewhere along the route so how long it takes until the next scan shows up really is no indicator on when the book was mailed.

Sometimes it's the p.o.'s doing - meaning at the originating p.o. they failed to scan it.  I've seen that on some pkgs I've mailed with the 1st scan being at our sorting facility, or worse not being until it was delivered.

One of our local branches does not scan. The first scan will be at the hub. The other uploads all the data in a group a couple of hours after the branch closes.

In my case, all the scans were recorded. Thank you everyone!

I've had many books make the trip from sender to me without ever being scanned until it hit my mailbox. You can't blame the sender for books that aren't scanned, they have no control over that and I am frustrated by the number of members suggesting that another member didn't mail the book because it wasn't scanned. What the PO is supposed to do and what they actually do are two entirely different matters.

I agree sally but why I asked is that I sometimes see (making dates up here) created on 10/1...then it says acceptance 10/20, then I see scans through the route. Everytime I see this, it means the post office just kept it for awhile? Or can a label be created, then the sender actually mails it later?

Generally I'd say that a late acceptance scan followed by active tracking scans means that they mailed late, but it truly is possible for packages to miss the tubs the PO uses to transport things in-house and get knocked under bins, counters, etc. Alternately, even with a printed label I think that a package can get set aside for some kind of special handling if part of the address is in question, which could add a few days on I suppose. Obviously I don't think that's the norm (they're packages, not dust bunnies!), but it is a thing... most often I'd think late mailing though.

I am frustrated by the number of members suggesting that another member didn't mail the book because it wasn't scanned.

In the case I mentioned above, it is now 22 days after the book was marked mailed and there still has not been a single scan. While this is not prrof that the sender did not mail, it is the most plausible and most likely explanation. The book is not being shipped overseas either, so it *should* have been here by now. Yes, it's possible that the person put it in their mailbox and it's lost under the seat in the mail truck, and has been there for the last 3 weeks. But IMHO it's more likely that it wasn't mailed. The label was printed, and 5 days later (just at the deadline), the person marked it mailed. I'm guessing maybe something happened and they marked mailed even though they hadn't actually mailed yet, thinking they'd get to it in the next day or two, but for whatever reason that didn't happen. I have not PMd the sender, because if that's what happened I'm guessing whatever is going on in their life is way more important than this book.
