I have notice that if you are shipping your package First Class, there is a FCM put in the box at the top of the label but when you send it media mail they blacken out the whole box.  My point is that it takes alot of ink to fill that box all the way up.  Why don't they just put MM in the box??  I don't know about anyone else but the ink for my printer ain't CHEAT!  Just a thought!

The black box is part of the USPS requirement for printed Media Mail labels. Here's the official page with examples: http://pe.usps.gov/text/dmm300/102.htm#1037049

Q: Ever wonder why PBS members receive a substantial discount for electronic DC?

A: Because the printed shipping label is standardized per USPS specifications (and thus faster and easier for them to process).  FCM or solid black, the label says exactly what USPS wants it to say.

DC is free on first class from usps.com.  Looks like DC is .19 cents on paypal for media mail/FC.  Depends if you want to spend the PBS surcharge and get immediate credit or if you want to pay going rates elsewhere and wait for credit from member once book is rec'd.  I prefer not putting a whole lot of money in the pockets of PBS for services that are less expensive elsewhere, and just pay the online costs of electronic DC.  Choices to look into Linda.

Yes, other websites receive the same/similar discount for offering standardized shipping labels.  The point being (per OP), PBS can't change shipping label format because they would 'look' better this way, or use less printer ink using a different format.

I don't mind the PBS surcharge, I like to support the site & really appreciate onsite transaction tracking.

I print all my labels using the "fast draft" option, which uses less ink but is still dark enough that scanning, etc., works.

Melissa - the electronic DC is only free on Priority mail, not First Class.  There is a 19 cent charge for eDC on First Class packages.

You can't buy first class postage from usps.com, only Priority or Express.

I prefer to give my money to PBS.  It keeps this whole club going.

Plus, if USPS, Paypal, or anyone else treated me even HALF as good as the Team at PBS, SwapaDVD, and SwapaCD, the world would be a much better place.

Signed,

a big fan
