I have a hardcover copy of the following book (not posted)

The Rowan
spacer.gif

The Rowan
Author: Anne McCaffrey

It's listed about 5 times with a shortened isbn.  The book was published in 1990 (so I was surprised it didn't have an isbn)

Can I post it using a shortened isbn?(using the post this book button)  Can I list it in the wishlist multiple order thread as having 5 wishers, even though each time it's listed in search with short isbn , each is listed with 1 wisher?

The short ISBN #'s are throw away numbers generated by the system when someone uses the "post book without ISBN" function. Technically I don't think you should post a book by any ISBN other than what is listed on the book itself, and if there isn't one you should generate your own by using the "post without ISBN feature".

no, you can't post it to one of the shortened ISBN's...those area only made for a one time usage.

The site doesn't recommend putting short ISBNs on our wishlists, but when somebody is adding every available version of a title to his wish list, often he'll click on some of the short ISBNs as well.  If what you are seeing now is only short ISBNs wish-listed, you can be pretty sure that the people who have it on their WL were already offered a regular ISBN version of the book.  When they received the book, they forgot to remove the short ISBNs from their wish lists.  At the bottom of this help doc About non-ISBN items at PBS, these are described as leftover wishes.

Also, whoever ordered that short-ISBN book will reuse that number when he's ready to repost it.  As explained above, you need to generate your own listing by posting it without an ISBN.

Yes, you can offer it in the Bazaar or your siggy or in the Genre Forums if they have threads set up for shelf advertising (no individual shelf advertising posts in the Genre forums should be done). You just cannot post it to an existing short ISBN because they apply to one specific copy of the book. You can also tag those Wish Listed books with something like "Hard Cover available under short ISBN XXXXXX" so if the person who wishlisted those other copies looks at their wish list, the will see that there is a copy available in the system.

Thanks Melanie-  I shall try tagging first and see if that works.

On second thought... I rather offer in the bazaar-   in the wl multiple thread-  would that be ok?

Technically? I would say no. The mulitples thread rules say that no books should be listed in there except wish listed books. Since your copy will be on your bookshelf or 0 wishers, it wouldn't technically qualify.

Its such a close one that I would almost say its fine since the one's with wishers are the same version, but then we are getting into allowing alternate versions to wish listed books and people love to stretch things so much that we'd end up with paperbacks with 2000 copies available being offered as *alternative versions* of a wishlisted audio book. Kwim?

I think if you get it in your siggy line and then add a note in your post there that it can also be included to make a multiple request, you will get the same results without breaking the rules.

I hate the fact they leave short ISBNs in the db, and it's just going to get worse as more and more get added.

I freed up a bunch of space on my WL when I realized that was happening and removed all the books that will never legitimately be posted.

They are just messing up searches and WLs to leave them hanging around.
