**Short shorts are, as is implied in the name, very short stories. These pieces try to tell a story using a very few number of words, typically fewer than 250. These are a few short shorts that I've written.**

I watched her, camera in hand, snapping photos with glee. The man walking behind her smiled at her obvious delight. Then she turned around and snapped a quick photo of him. He laughed and ran up to her, catching her into his arms. I watched as he twirled her around and kissed her softly before setting her down on the ground. They walked together, hand in hand as she looked about it wonder. She pointed out the leaves on the trees and the birds flying overhead. She stopped and stooped down to take a picture of a squirrel bathing itself. It was as though the whole world was new and she was seeing it with virgin eyes. The man took her hand again, helping her up and drawing her down the sidewalk and into the afternoon sun.

This morning had been difficult. Last night she’d been up very late. It wasn’t that she wanted to be awake, she just was; a casualty of the switch to Daylight Saving Time. She’d barely managed to get out of bed this morning in time to shower and run to class, but she’d forced herself to do it anyway. And it was worth it when she saw Dave standing there, waiting for her with a smile, at the lecture hall door. His sexy smile always brightened her day. While they sat listening to Professor Gunderson talk for an hour about confidence intervals for two population means she leaned her head on Dave’s shoulder. She wanted to go to sleep, content in her man’s arms. Dave smiled down at her and then kissed her on the top of the head. She smiled. Everything was going to be OK.

His arms are warm, wrapped around me under the blankets. The alarm screams at me. I stretch to turn it off, but I don’t get up. The room is cold. My bed is warm. I’m tired. He whispers in my ear, begging me to stay in his arms. He’s very convincing. But the demands of my day begin to run through my mind. I feel them pulling me from his arms. I really need to go to class today, and that means I need to shower and do my makeup. And since it’s so cold out I’ll also need to blow dry my hair.
He buries his face in my hair. He kisses my neck. He begs me to stay with him. I want to stay there in his arms. I know that I’m safe there. I am comforted there. But the real world is out there. My responsibilities are out there as well. They keep drawing me from his arms. I turn in his arms and return the affections. I tell him I’ll be back. I know that he will wait for me. He’s always there waiting for me. Sometimes he ignores me when I return, but he always takes me back.
I tell him I love him and then I crawl out of Morpheus’ arms and into my day.
