Short Stories and Sketches18881922 Author:Henry Lawson, Colin Roderick (Editor) Colin Roderick presents Lawson's short stories along the lines of the plan Lawson himself originally had for publishing them in book form. Lawson wanted to bring together stories that formed a sequence, so that the full force of his art might be felt. This he could not do because some of the stories he needed for a sequence had not appeared ... more »in the periodical to which he had sold them.
Some of the stories included here have never appeared in book form, while some of the writings with which Lawson filled out his books were not short stories at all. Moreover, almost all of his stories were altered by well-meaning editors who, having only a single isolated story before them at any one time, were not in a position to see the damaging effect of their deletions and emendations on Lawson's broad plan.
In this volume Colin Roderick has gone to all extant versions of the stories and has restored the text objectively to the latest version for which Lawson could be held responsible.
He has arranged the 222 stories included here by a combination of date of composition and theme, so that the development of Lawson's power as a short-story writer becomes strikingly evident.
The date of composition and the title of the book in which each story first appeared are given at the end of each story. Where the story did not appear in book form, the name of the periodical in which it was first printed appears.« less
