The Other Side of the Rainbow with Judy Garland on the Dawn Patrol
The Other Side of the Rainbow with Judy Garland on the Dawn Patrol Author:Mel Torme Versatility, of itself, is an overprized attribute. The important question is not: how many things can a man do, but how many things he can do well? Mel Torme is our most knowledgeable pop-singer, a fine arranger, a gifted lyricist, a most able composer, and a more than competent drummer. In this absorbing account he reveals what his friends hav... more »e known for some time, that he is as handy at the typewriter as he is at the piano.
The Other Side of the Rainbow is....half autobiography and half biography. Mel lays out the strands of his own life and those of the life of Judy Garland, then weaves them together to form a patter unavailable to the other biographers of the tragic, talented, tormented little girl who never learned hot to grow up.
...the book is of unusual interest in that it accurately reveals the inner workings of a network television program. It is easy enough to say - as most of us do - that the bulk of television programming is undistiguished. The Other Side of the Rainbow shows how, in detail, a program can fail to live up to the expectations and hopes of the frequently gifted people who are assigned to bring it into your home week after week.
Mel Torme sensitively reflects the reality that was Judy Garland. Perhaps only another entertainer could so clearly suggest the puzzling mixture of ego and self-destructive insecurity that tortures so many prominent performers.
