Young Susannah Campbell has been painted with layers of hatred and tragedy. As political outcasts, she and her husband James fled Carolina for the Kentucky wilderness, only to encounter there the rage of native Indians. Soon widowed, and grieving over the death of her unborn child, Susannah, part Indian, withstands ostracism because of her appearance. Proud, beautiful, and courageous, she determines to leave Kentucky forever on a flatboat for freedom.
