The Silent Boy
Author: Lois Lowry
Precocious Katy Thatcher comes to realize what a gentle, silent boy did for his family. He meant to help, not harm. It didn?t turn out that way. ?The author balances humor and generosity with the obstacles and injustice of Katy?s world to depict a complete picture of the turn of the 20th century.??Publishers Weekly, Starred

This is a most compelling story told by a young girl about her experiences and friendship with a young boy who has limited mental abilities. She understands him and enjoys the time she spends with him. It's so charming. I truly enjoyed the storyl, sad thought the ending is.

This is an excellent book--very well written; though it is not for children. Some of the content, while not inappropriate, is too mature for young ones. Lois Lowry books tend to have a lot of deep content, as opposed to the `fluff' that makes up most children's literature today. Several other good books by Ms. Lowry are "The Giver," "Gathering of Blue" and "Number the Stars."
