I got my little cousin reading by giving him Captain Underpants books. I was hoping to get him books for Christmas. Can anyone recommend books that are like those (with that laugh-out-loud humor)? He is 7 years old and in the 2nd grade. I don't have kids of my own, so I am kind of lost. Thanks for the recommendations in advance!

My son really enjoys the Mad science series by Kathy Brkett and Anne Capeci, as well as the "Franny K. Stein" series by Jim Benton.  He is in 3rd grade.

At his age he would be interested in any of these series....

The Magic Tree House, The Time Warp Trio, Nate the Great, & Horrible Harry

Dav Pilkey also writes the Ricky Ricotta series which my kids like.  My daughter also used to laugh out loud at Junie B. Jones.

My son's first grade teacher recommended the Geronimo Stilton series.  She said her kids LOVE it.  I just ordered one for my son so I'm just taking her word for it.  Apparently they're quite funny and are visually interesting as well.  She also mentioned that Diary of a Wimpy Kid is quite popular with that age group (especially boys).  I also recently got my son a few of the A to Z mysteries but he hasn't started any yet so I can't give you a review.  Good luck!

My son read the whole A to Z mystery series.  They are good, but not overly funny.  My son did love the Horrible Harry series, but by the end of 2nd grade they were a bit to simple for him.  As a parent, I never like the Junie B. series since Junie B. is not a real nice kid.  Magic Tree house is interesting, but not funny and also since clues will carry over from one book the the next, I would recomend getting them in order.  When he gets older, the Henry Huggins books by Beverly Cleary are very funny to my son.  But I wouldn't recomend those till 3rd grade.  Flat Stanely was also funny to my son last year.  I am not sure of the author.

Hope this helps,

Mandy
