Have you checked out the new similarity ratings on you buddy list?  I believe it's comparing wishlists but someone correct me if I'm wrong.  Interesting!

ETA  Ok I was off just a bit, here's what it says about it..

Introduced August, 2008.

The Similarity Index shows how "alike" you and your Buddy are.  it is largely determined by your favorite genres as chosen on the Member Homepage, and also by specific books you have rated using the star rating system.

Right now, the Similarity Index is only applied to your Buddy List, but we do anticipate expanding this in many fun ways in the future.

To check your Similarity to a Buddy, go to your Buddy List (in the menu under My Account at the top of any page on the site, or from the Buddy List tab on the My Account main page).  You will see a notation --  Similarity: xx% -- to the right of each Buddy's name.    The range of similarity is from 0% to 100%.

Right now, most scores will be pretty inaccurate, because many members have not applied star ratings to very many books.  You can make the Similarity Index more powerful and accurate by applying Star ratings to every book you have read, and also choosing your favorite genres on the Member Homepage.

When you find a highly similar Buddy, you can

  • check her bookshelf for books she has that you might be interested in
  • check her Wish list for books she is interested in that you may want to Wish List too
  • revel in the glorious feeling of not being alone...you are not the only one with your weirdo taste in books! :)

This is a fun feature whose results may surprise you!

I was just looking at this. I'm most similar with Elizabeth B. (Cattriona) -  Similarity: 24%

*running off to check out Elizabeth's shelf*

Valli, mine says I'm most similar with you - 24%.  I would have thought it would be Colleen as I've read lots of the books on her shelf and WL.  If I haven't already read them they are on my WL or in my TBR pile.  Interesting.

Donna, mine shows you at 20%. I was expecting to see Jennifer really high on mine because we read just about the same books. I suppose my interest in oddball non-fiction might have skewed it.

Kylee is 46% on mine but I don't think she posts on this thread much.  The one I'm most similar with that's a "regular" here is Juli and that's at 38%.

Hahaha! Valli, you are hilarious!

The highest people on my list are Valli @ 22%, Rebecca H. - MaskedPenguinAvenger Similarity: 20%, and Kathy W. - pelette  Similarity: 20%

I really expected to be more similar to Valli too, but I guess her non-fiction and my fantasy skew our results.

When you look at someone's profile it has the similarity rating.  Evidently they don't have to be on your buddy list.

Valli is my highest also, at 28%.  I have a total of 8 (out of 43) that rank 25% to 28%.  Pretty kewl !

I must be really oddball. The best I have found so far is 12% to Michelle and I am only 112% to myself. I guess I already knew that I was odd!

I don't know Valli, it looks like I would have to share you with too many others!

Oh, is that what the 113% means?  I couldn't understand that one!  They don't know me very well.  There are days when I am not very similar to me at all.

I had a 24% to someone but I get many of books elsewhere; also many of mine are on wishlists, they go out randomly.

I don't have a large buddy list, but one of my higher similarities was to someone who was just added recently.  I can only guess it was because I said I'd quit reading a rather lightweight series - and that seems to be what she reads (?).   There's nothing wrong with that, but it didn't seem like we'd be meshing.  I read a few light things but the line is thin between  fun and dumb for me.

BTW, I tried Scaramouche again (see other thread) and it finally got going.  It's just a slow starter, I guess.

I've reduced the similarity with myself, it was 118% and now I'm down to 100%

I'm also surprised, I would have expected to have higher similarity indexes with y'all, but my highest is the fabulous Beverly B. - macaw  at  22%

How are some of you similar to yourself?  Did you become buddies with yourself?

Michele, click on any profile (including your own) and see the similarity.  It doesn't have to be a buddy.

Awesome Holly! I didn't even have you on my buddy list for some reason! I just added you though. My most similar buddy is now Holly, also at 33%! I am going to have to check out your WL now!

I figured out that you don't have to have the person on your buddy list to see what percentage similarity they are to you.  I just randomly clicked on someone in another forum and it said on the top left side of her profile that she was 11% similar to me.

Jen- I'm almost scared to check your WL because I don't want to end up adding a bunch more to mine :)

ETA: I didn't see Donna's post before I posted this one.  Seems she figured it out before me!
