This heartbreaking book is about the author's own son, who went from troubled adolescent to drug abuser and criminal. This soul searching story by one of the finest writers of true crime today is told without self pity and with great truthfulness. The fact that the son finally committed the ultimate crime of murder brought to a sad close what had seemed to be a never ending cycle of self-destruction and disruption of the lives of the entire family. The book ends on a hopeful note. The son, who agreed to this book, finally seems to understand some of his problems blames himself, rather than others, for his situation, while the father is able to move on with his life with the understanding that he did everything he could possibly do to help this troubled young man.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. The author writes about the difficulties he has raising his oldest son. Carlton Stowers puts his heart and soul into this biography. As a parent, I could relate to the problems he had with his son as he reached the rebellous teenage years. I think Carlton Stowers took entirely too much blame for his son's troubles, but could understand why he did. That's what parents do. He is very candid about his whole life. It must have been very hard for him to write this book.
