My sister is also a member here at PBS and today she got a strange email, sent directly to her, not thru the PBS system, from someone who says they are a member of Book Crossings.  They wanted to know if she still had a book she got from PBS and that they were willing to trade her any book for it.

  • How did this person get her direct email address?
  • How did this person know what kind of transactions she had made on PBS?

What did she do?

Did the book she got from PBS have book crossing stickers? Maybe the person who sent it to her posted enough info over there that somebody was able to identify her and somehow google enough to find her email address. That would be a violation of privacy.

If I were your sister, I would respond to the email and ask this person how she found me. I would also PM the person who originally sent me the book and ask if he or she knows how this third party could have found me.

Also, in your account setting / privacy controls, you can allow buddies to see your email address. Maybe one or both of these people is also on her buddy list here and got her email address that way.

maybe the info was available on bookcrossings?  I don't really belong over there so don't know if they have an option to email someone from there

Why doesn't she just email the person and ask her.  Sometimes the direct approach is the best.

Has she ever referred anyone to PBS?  Maybe she gave out her email when doing so.

She emailed the person about who/what/why/how and she's waiting for a response.

They probably got her info from Book-X.  PBS does not give out email addresses.

There is an option is privacy settings to let your buddies see your email address.   IF that is on and accept buddies automatically, the email could be gotten that way.   Long shot - but possible.

Bookcrossing does not give out email addresses either.       Is she signed up with Bxing?   Did someone send a PM via that system?  Those messages come directly into your email.
