Kate Weatherley, deputy director of a London East End social services bureau, is being contacted by a stranger who had given the name of the husband she had left years ago. Then the man was found dead at her door, curled in the gutter. The police are suspicious, especially when it turns out that now, nearly 10 years later, Kate had a strong motive for killing her husband. Kate knows that the stranger and her husband are not one and the same. When tracing her husband, her inquiries put her life in danger, someone wants Kate dead.
