Are DC updates coming in more slowly these days, or am I just (un)lucky?

What I mean is, (1) I recently had a book go lost for which no DC update was ever shown;

(2) another DC was just updated for the first time after three weeks and the book is still in the same state;

and (3) a third book is showing no DC update even though it was supposedly mailed ten days ago.

The books being mailed without DC most generally get to me within a week - usually less.

By the way, I don't usually use DC myself, but when I do, it's always been updated (for quick credit) with a day or two.

I sent a book that was never scanned at all.  I mailed several books two weekends ago and they all were scanned and marked received within a week.  One book had no scans, so I was beginning to think it was lost at the PO, then Monday it was marked received.  I checked the details in my transaction archive and the book was never scanned.

I have found the scanning at the PO is erratic.  I checked with the PO a week after dropping off some book and was told that they typically don't scan the DC for Medai Mail at the originating PO.  It's 2 weeks later and still hasn't been scanned?????

If they don't scan media mail at the originating post office and it doesn't get scanned along the way, it makes you wonder about the point of using DC for quick credits. I don't use it very often, but see it on packages coming to me quite a bit.

Just an update to my first post, the #2 book finally got moving and arrived this week. The #1 and  #3 books are the same: the first is lost and the second one is not showing any movement. Now I have a #4 book that's been in limbo (not moving) ten days. Needless to say, I've been receiving a lot of "Has this book been received" messages.

The distribution PO my media mail uses stopped scanning on the way out sometime within the last month if you drop it in the blue box with PBS DC and postage. It really threw my for a loop because I thought everything was going lost. Then one by one, they started getting scanned at the receiving distribution centers.

Even though DC means they'll scan on delivery or near abouts, most of us got used to much earlier scans.  My PO obviously strictly went over to that  delivery-only mode recently ... no more scanning in my state.

I miss the scans in my own state ... now I have no way of knowing if it's truly on its way till it is nearly at its destination.

ETA: Oh wait. I seem to remember when I just used just PBS DC and went into the PO to pay postage that they scanned it right there at the counter. So shouldn't it show as an acceptance scan and you'd get credit then? That's what mine used to do. That should be how it works cuz I know they have to scan it to add the rest of the DC cost. I know when I mail books  for  swaps that the scans show up right away when I look under Custom Postage.

I sent out 2 books with PBS postage and DC.  They weren't scanned until 3 days later at the Richmond, Va distribution center.  But I'd been checking for info on these 2 and the notice by PBS didn't show up until 2 days after that!  Not sure what is going on there.  By the time PBS had the original scan they had already made it to their destination distribution centers in CA and TX.  Very strange.

Yes, Susan, if you pay for the postage at the counter it should be scanned then and you'd get the credit right away. I still have mine by the afternoon on the day I mail stuff when I do that. That's the only way I get a local scan.

Yes some of my books do not have any updates except from my PO that it was accepted.  Some are just being scanned when they reach the destination state.   I wonder if this is because it is summer and there are many subs?

I wanted to add that I have been using USPS Tracking - I then sign up for the alerts to my email - I seem to get more information than from PBS Details (just recent over the past few weeks)

I have one I dropped in the box a few days ago to CA that seems to have gotten skipped on the initial scan, but then I put one in the box yesterday to TN that I just got the credit for this morning.

I don't know if I'm going to continue to bother with the DC when I drop them in the box, because that scan is so iffy...  I think I'll only use DC if I'm handing it directly to the postal worker at the counter for that initial scan.  I also had another one that never showed a scan, even when delivered... it just got marked as "received" one day from the other member.  (That one was a multiple book order too, had me a little nervous...)

I really have started to skip the DC on most of my orders... have done just a few lately as "experiments..."

Boy, I think the P.O. should be happy with all the business coming from PBS in a day where they're losing revenue left and right due to online bill-pay, etc!

"Boy, I think the P.O. should be happy with all the business coming from PBS in a day where they're losing revenue left and right due to online bill-pay, etc!"

The P O claims they lose money on Media Mail and keep it only because they're required to do so.

I think if you frequent the same PO John they are grateful.  I couldn't make it to the PO so I asked a friend to drop them off for me.  She said the woman behind the line said  - oh more books and then grumbled about something and then said "I shouldn't complain - she is giving us a lot of  business - which is good for the PO"

So I guess some are appreciating all those packages :)

Don't forget that DC stands for Delivery Confirmation and that's all the PO says they will do - scan it when delivered.  Sometimes, they scan it along the way but often they don't.
