Wonderfully written account of a woman in a mental institution. Shock therapy and other less than humane methods are used on some patients. The main character isn't insane, but is almost convinced that she is since she has memory lapses/missing days ("missing pages" of her memory).
This book shows some of the horrors of sanitariums before certain methods were outlawed.

This book was published in 1946 and was later made into a movie starring Olivia deHaviland. It is fiction, but... it is interesting to note that conditions in state hospitals haven't changed much in 60 years. If you are interested in mental health issues, this should be part of your library. It never names her disease, but it's clear it's schizophrenia and it's an interesting look from a patient's perspective. Makes me wonder about the author. Anyway...highly recommended.
