Wondering if anyone beside me feels that Severus Snape is a tragic hero?   All through the HP books, Snape is presented as nasty, hateful, DeathEater, etc.   I view him as a tragic hero who paid dearly for his unrequited love of Lily Potter.  He showed great strength in completing his mission in aiding HP in the face of being reviled by one and all, with the notable exception of Dumbledore.  Throwing this out for comment, unless this topic has already surfaced and I missed it.   Terry

I agree Teri, I love the character Snape. I think he sacrifed all at the end. Would love to see a prequel written, when Snape, James and Lily were students.

I could never figure out if he was good or bad.  I looked at the trust Dumbledore put in him, and figured it couldn't be misplaced.  But then he was always so - not evil, but dark.

I also saw Snape as a tragic hero.  He's actually one of my favorite characters from Harry Potter.  Though he had an abusive upbringing and dabbled in the Dark Arts as a young adult, he never became truly dark.  With Dumbledore's help, he was able to channel his grief and guilt at Lily's death into something good.  He was also extraordinarily loyal to the memory of Lily, protective of the school, and even his fellow teachers and staff though outwardly he seemed like such an unpleasant fellow, but that was to hide all the powerful emotions he felt.  You can see his true devotion to Lily in Snape's Patronus.    I'm such a sucker for tortured heroes like that.

It's odd but I liked Snape from the first potter movie, (he was so-so in the books) but I think it was the actor who played him that I was so fond of.

I also like the actor who plays Snape.  Alan Rickman has the most amazing velvety voice.  That man could read me the phone directory and I would be a happy woman. laugh
