I've just recently come across a short series by Susan. S. James. The first book is Belles of Solace Glen and it was great! There is no murder/grisly stuff in these books. Just good mystery. It's set in a very small town, and the main character is Flip Paxton. She's a 42 yr old housecleaner in her gossipy, tiny little town. But she also the rock, the heart, the center of it, too. Orphaned at 18, she was "adopted" by several other ladies in town and her "mothers" were always there for her as she struggled to make it. There is a wonderful undertone of family, friends and love in this book, but it's not sappy at all.
Her "mother" Leona dies and tells Flip to give a secret packet of Civil War letters to her neice, Lee. These letters cause quite a stir and the gossip mill runs over time. There is a lot of humor, laughs and giggles in this book too.
The only sad thing is that there only seems to be 3 books in this series. I'm holdin off on the last one for a little while, to make it last!
