Hi, does anyone recognize this plot, and tell me who the author is? I read it a year ago, have never found the next (I think two) books in the series. I know it was a female author.

divorced temp office worker who has pubished one book
cop ex-husband, who is getting remarried, and invites her to the wedding
wealthy temp employer writes new will, gives to protagonist, he is killed-his family (reclusive mom, dandy brother and money-hungry sister and niece ) are suspects
Protagonist's apartment is trashed
Will stolen from her purse
photo of killed client shows apparent intimate encounter with child
 --? revenge killing
she goes to genius but eccentric/hypochondriac female PI, who lives in a posh cottage
with a british bodyguard/chauffeur and scandinavian cook. She wears only black and white. She
takes case, but wants protagonist to write her memoirs/autob.
Protagonist moves into PI's cottage and the trio (PI, bodyguard and protagonist) solve case.

thanks in advance,  hrooster

Thanks for the suggestion above. I found it though: The Mother Shadow by Melodie Johnson Howe. It introduces Claire Conrad (the PI) and Maggie Hill (the secretary/writer) as a (sort of) Nero Wolfe/Archie Goodwin team.

It was a nice read.

So the author only wrote two books in this series? One, nominated for the Edgar, the Agatha and the Anthony award for Best First Novel, was The Mother Shadow (1989); the other was Beauty Dies (1994). A third, Cheap Tears, was never published. Wonder why the series ended so abruptly?
