I read a series of sci fi books(adult level) when i was a young teen, written in the 70's or 80's that I am trying my best to remember what they were. The best details I can remember are: 1. The main charactor was a guy, kinda rough pirate type that had a starship. He was either a pirate, smuggler, or rebel I can't exactly remember. 2. There was a love interest so it had a romantic string to it but that was not the main story line. 3. He ends up being by the end of the series a very important guy either a powerful pirate leader or planet leader or something of that nature.

It seems that in the first book the hero was kidnaped from his home planet and MAYBE sold as a slave or something. My dad who also read this series wanted to say that the planet Jupiter rang some bells but that is not certain. I do know that the cover of one of the later books in the series pictures the hero seated at the captain's chair of his ship looking very serious and scary.

I know this is not much to go on but ANY help would be greatly appriciated.

Is is possibly the Jandar of Callisto series by Lin Carter?  I haven't read them, but here's the description from the back of the first book:

"On Callisto, moon of Jupiter, a world of black and crimson jungles wher ethe hand of every man is lifted in eternal enmity against every other...a savage, hostile world on which he is first held prisoner by the fearsome insect-men, only to be freed for a more binding slavery in the deadly clutches of the insidious Sky Pirates...and in the incalculable aura of the beautiful princess Darloona who elicits love almost beyond the limits of his mortal soul..."

The first book is copyrighted 1972, and there are at least six books in the series.  They look like they're in a similar vein to Edgr Rice Burroughs John Carter of Mars series.

I will check into this series to see if it is the one I am looking for. I am currently trying to find book one. If this is the one, I owe you big time. I am a big sci fi fan so if you have any good suggestions along these same lines feel free to pass them onto to me. You could not bestow your advice on a more grateful reader.

It might also be Piers Anthony's Bio of a Space Tyrant.  In the first book the main character is a refugee from Calisto trying to emigrate to Jupiter as an illegal alien and the ship on which he travels is repeatedly attacked by pirates, in subsequent books he joins the navy and rises through the ranks, becomes a politician and the President of Jupiter, etc.  Your number 3 and the reference to Jupiter made me wonder if this is possibly the series you are looking for - it was published in the 1980s, I believe.
