I am not to picky about the books I get, I would however like them to be in  decent condition. No smoke smell and by this I mean when I unwrap the book I don't want say whoa LOL , pages falling out or pages so brown they can''t be read

I received a book yesterday, when I opened it my hubby and daughter were standing in the room. We all at the same time said whoa that stinks  LOL the smoke smell what really bad.  I was a smoker for over 50 years so the smell of smoke doesn't get to me often.  The book was not only brown on the edges but all over the pages. I have never had a RC before about the shape of the books I want so don't know if this is worded ok or not.

Well, pages falling out is a received-with-a-problem issue. But yellowed, or in your case, brown pages... is not. That would be what you want on your RC rather than reiterating PBS guidelines.

I would mention the phrase most people use here for the smoke smell: No books that smell of smoke or are in a smoking household.

Then add in an additional request for the page color condition. I seem to want to word it "not excessively yellow or brown pages" but that's subjective, because who is to say how yellow is excessive. Maybe someone can help with that instead of me?

Good look with the wording! :)

PS: it's too picky, not to

Honestly, I think it's both confusing and subjective.

I might try something a little more neutral such as:

Please turn down this request if your books come from a smoking home or if the pages of the book are discolored. Thanks!

I would have a problem with the phrase "in decent condition". That's too subjective. What is decent condition to you might not be the same to me. And I would change the smoke request too. It sounds like you are saying if it smells of smoke but doesn't reek, that's ok. But I'm not sure that's really what you mean. And one little thing, it's too (too picky) not to.  Good luck with setting up your RC, I understand how tough it is.

I'm sorry if this sounds harsh, but the grammar, punctuation and spelling errors make it really hard for me to understand what you're trying to say.

Willa,

I am so sorry that you are having a problem understanding what I am trying to say. I am having my 10 year old grandson do the typing for me since, I am going through chemo and don't have the energy to sit for any amount of time.  I am sure by the time he gets to be your age, he hopefully will be as smart and as well read as you are.

Sounds good to me, too!

Bertie, I obviously offended you and I'm sorry for that.   But you did ask, and what I said was the simply the truth. Having so many errors made your request hard to understand.

An RC should be as simple and clear as possible. I tend to turn down requests that have complicated RC's .

I am very sensitive to the smell of smoke and therefore I have a "no smoking home" RC.  However, my husband does not smell it at all unless it's under his nose--and then, not that much.  Therefore I don't like RCs that say no smell of smoke. Nobody that lives here or visits smokes.  I bought a new book, read it within a week and mailed it (wrapped in plastic) and the receiver stated that it smelled of smoke.
