I'm reading this series and am wondering what genre it would be considered. Is it HF or would it be fantasy? Guessing fantasy since it's made up, but thought I'd check since I've seen it mentioned on this board here and there. I didn't know if I could use as a challenge book or not. No biggie if not, I'm still reading it! :)

In my humble opinion, it's pure fantasy. It's completely fictional -- no historical events or characters in the books -- despite being somewhat inspired by the Wars of the Roses. To me, historical fiction has to be set in the past and has to have real events, figures, and/or details from that time period. But, it's a series definitely worth reading!!!

ETA: Actually, I've read only the first book which I really, really liked -- can't say anything about the other books, except that my husband has read them and likes them.

Kelly, since it is fantasy it would not be considered HF in the literal sense, but as I recall these books are kind of based on the War of the Roses. The setting would be considered medieval so I would say in the broadest terms possible they could be called H/F

Meh, I figured. cheeky Dragons and magic and all of that great stuff. yes

I'm on book 3 now and thoroughly enjoying it. I've heard the series lags after this book though, so I'm hoping it won't be too disappointing!

While I agree that the series is completely fantasy, I thought the first one read like a historical fiction saga.  However, I'm slogging through the second one - I'm having a much harder time with it.

Am I the only one who couldn't get into this?

....crossing fingers...

So it could possibly be considered Historical Fantasy?  I ask because I plan on using Game of Thrones in the HF Challenge to fulfill #94 (Read any Historical Fantasy book) ?   cheeky

Cathy, I like the first few well enough,  I lost interest after that.

I also feel that the series is pure fantasy with elements of the War of the Roses in it.  I found I enjoyed the first book much more when I concentrated on the story and the characters and stopped trying to figure out who they might have been historically.

Not historical fantasy.   It's not even set on earth. If this is historical fantasy, then so is anything else with humans in it and ... no electricity.

Loved the first three.  Disappointed in the fourth.  I've had the 5th for months now and I'm only ... hmm ... maybe 8 chapters into it.  My hubby and I were reading it aloud to each other, but interest has dwindled to almost nothing.
