Fantastic tale of a family gone bizarre. I love Morrison's fantastical writing and deep character analysis.

I found this a very sad book. The multiple, subtle hints of racism between blacks and whites and, sadly, black to blacks, build up to a disturbing ending. Mysterious, sometimes hard to believe, but always powerful.

A coming of age story of Milkman, an African American boy growing up in a relatively wealthy family. Macon Dead III, aka Milkman, seems to always be surrounded by controversy... either between his parents, among his friends, or with his aunt and her family. He grows up feeling no connection to his family and drifting through an easy life provided by his father's property wealth and his mother's reputation as the doctor's daughter. Milkman embarks on a journey that ultimately helps him find his heritage and himself... He learns to "fly" on his own.

i usually like her writing, but i was not as impressed with this one (the ending blew it for me). i would recommend 'the bluest eye' or 'beloved' before this.
