After reading a ton of posts in the CMT forums, I just want to say that I am annoyed that people use God's name to promote intolerance and bigotry, hate, the list goes on.

I, and my whole house, we are all Christians, we love the Lord, and we don't see anywhere in our Bible where a right to choice, another religion or spiritual path, or who you love is going to ban you to hell.

Please don't consider all of us christians to think, feel and believe the way it's been represented in the CMT forum.  I assure you we don't all read the "Draw Your Own Conclusion Bible".

I think there are two types of Christians - those who are Christian in their hearts and those who are Christian in their mouths.  Unfortunately the latter group is 100 times more vocal.

I'm sorry too.  I'm sorry you don't have more support here, and in the real world.  It sucks. :*(

While I was trying to lighten the mood a bit, I really and truly am sorry.  I've privately apologized to a couple of folks, but it just seems like I should do it publicly.  It's always a question of saying something on the CMT board or not.  If I don't, is my silence a form of acceptance?  But if I do, we all know that will only invite more hurtful comments, so do I have the right to put people thru that, just to cast pearls before swine?  I really don't know.  So I just wanted to say I'm really sorry that those crazies try to make you believe that all christians think and feel that way.  It's simply not true.

It's a catch 22.

Edited because honestly, I don't think anything anyone does will make a difference here. :/

Julie & everyone else - I really truly don't know that you need to apologize for other peoples opinions & screwed up beliefs.  Of course, I'm speaking for myself here...;-)   Sometimes for me, it's just knowing that I have you all as supporters here at PBSland.  We can't change the world, but we can work to change our little worlds that we live in everyday.  And something in my heart tells me that is what happens with you all - you take in nephews, your support your gay child, you teach your children to be open to others, you talk to a co-worker about an off-color joke or comment and get to understand that it's offensive.  I'm sure the list could go on & on, but I hope you understand what I'm trying to say.

A friend of mine sends out a daily quote - this is one from the other day - and I think it's fitting:

I believe there is an important distinction to be made between religion and spirituality. Religion I take to be concerned with belief in the claims to salvation of one faith tradition or another--an aspect of which is acceptance of some form of meta-physical or philosophical reality, including perhaps an idea of heaven or hell. Connected with this are religious teachings or dogma, ritual, prayers and so on. Spirituality I take to be concerned with those qualities of the human spirit--such as love and compassion, patience, tolerance, forgiveness, contentment, a sense of responsibility, a sense of harmony, which bring happiness to both self and others. -His Holiness the Dalai Lama

Regardless of the issue -- I find this essay (excerpt below) *always* provides me inspiration on the topic of silence and language.. I strive, and sometimes fail, to find a response that *I* can live with, one which speaks my peace (and, for brevity and efficienty, is often focussed towards those at the margins in such 'debates'). Speaking up as a statistically small voice does wonders for those reading from similar vantage points.

I highly recommend Sister Outsider (hah -- no, I'm not listing my copy!!!).

"I have come to believe over and over again, that what is most important to me must be spoken, made verbal and shared, even at the risk of having it bruised or misunderstood.... My silences had not protected me. Your silence will not protect you.... and while we wait in silence for that final luxury of fearlessness, the weight of that silence will choke us. The fact that we are here and that I speak these words is an attempt to break that silence and bridge some of those differences between us, for it is not difference which immobilizes us, but silence. And there are so many silences to be broken."

Audre Lorde (The Transformation of Silence into Language and Action, Sister Outsider).

Thank you Julie for expressing the thoughts of so many Christians out there who hope to live the love that Jesus spoke about.

I do not know that I saw the forum that you guys are speaking of, but I hate when I read hate in the name of Christ!

"In the End, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends."

- Martin Luther King Jr.

So thanks to all of who are not silent!
