I absolutely loved The Demon Trapper's Daughter and was excited to read the second book in the series. It was a wonderful read, I really enjoyed it. I love the world and the characters, there is just so much going on in this book.

Riley is recovering from the battle at the Tabernacle. The Trapper's are hanging on by a thread, many of them are injured or dead and the level 5 geo fiend is still at large. Riley's boyfriend Simon is just barely alive. Now Riley has to contend with the mysterious Ori who has decided to be her body guard and her overprotective kind of brother Beck. While juggling all these guys she also has to find out who reanimated her dad, where the counterfeit holy water is from, and track down a level 5 Geo Fiend. To make matters worse the Vatican has decided to step in and now Demon Hunters are in Atlanta trying to make the Trapper's look bad and take over the city.

There is a lot going on in this book. Riley is dealing with a ton of different things all at once. I loved that we got to spend more time with Ori, he was a mysterious presence in the last book and you get to see a lot more of him and his awesome fighting skills in this book. You also learn a lot more about Beck's past and why he acts the way he does around Riley.

I felt bad for Riley she just never gets a break in this book; things keep getting worse and worse and she's hanging on by a thread. She has a great attitude about it all though and she is really a fighter; I enjoy her as a character and just wish she could get some good breaks once in a while.

The story gets a lot bigger in this book too. Now there are angels and demons and it looks like Heaven and Hell might actually be waging war in Atlanta; I love the ambiguity around who is actually good and bad. Looks like Heaven isn't as good and Hell isn't as bad as you might expect. There is some great world building in this book. We learn more about the history behind both the demon trappers and the demon hunters. There is just a ton packed into this book and I enjoyed it all.

Lots of great characters too. I totally sympthize with Riley and am intrigued by all of the interesting side characters. There are no boring characters in this book, even if they are just minor characters. We get to spend a lot more time with some side characters that were introduced in the first book; Riley spends time with both witches and necromancers in this story.

I love Oliver's writing style. It is engaging, flows beautifully, and is so easy to read. I just absolutely love the way she writes and it makes the book a pleasure to read.

This book wraps up nicely. Some major plot points are wrapped up well, but there are a lot of other plot points that are still dangling to be addressed in the third book, Forgiven (UK title) out in 2012.

Overall I absolutely loved this book. I am loving this series, it is one of my favorite YA urban fantasy series right now. I love the detailed world-building, love the characters, and love the fast-paced plot. There is some wonderful action in here and some truly surprising plot turns. Fans of urban fantasy (both YA and adult alike) need to check this series out. I absolutely cannot wait to see what happens in Forgiven (Demon Trappers, #3).

**SPOILERS FOR FORSAKEN, THE FIRST BOOK IN THE SERIES (which you should definitely read first!)**

Its a bit difficult to give a brief summary of Forbidden without revealing too much, as there are a heck of a lot of amazing plot twists which I really dont want to spoil, but Ill try my best: Forbidden starts where Forsaken left us with the entire city of Atlanta recovering from the demon attack that occurred at the Demon Trapper meeting; Trappers are mourning the loss of some of their greatest as well as attempting to work out how they were attacked in the first place and the citizens of Atlanta are worried that theyre not being protected efficiently enough from the demons, which leads to the ruthlessly efficient Demon Hunters being called in something the Trappers arent best pleased about. Meanwhile, Rileys relationship with Simon is most definitely on the rocks, which leads to a growing attraction to the mysterious Ori, who vows to protect her from the deadly demon that is determined to kill her. Aside from all of this, shes trying to figure out who brought her dad back from the dead and why someone is selling counterfeit Holy Water, as well as trying to earn enough to pay the rent.

In case you havent read Forsaken and are completely confused, the series is set in an alternate world where demons roam freely, and are graded from very harmless (Grade One a.k.a. klepto-fiends) to extremely dangerous (Grade Five a.k.a. Geo-Fiends). Trappers and Hunters do as they say on the tin with regards to the getting rid of the demonic presences, and theres quite a bit of a rivalry between the two. Witches and Necromancers (people who reanimate the dead to sell as slaves) also exist and trade freely in this alternate future of 2018. The series is set in Atlanta, which is desperately poor, and doing anything it can to save or increase money, including closing schools and housing classes in abandoned buildings or coffee shops. Riley is a Demon Trapper one of the youngest, and the only female whose father was recently killed by a demon, who is now after her.

The events of Forsaken were recapped very well without seeming patronising or spelling things out as obviously as possible (which many books annoyingly do), and are much needed as I, for one, had forgotten several things having read the first book of this amazing series over six months ago. I cant describe why I like Olivers writing and characterisation so much youll just have to grab a copy yourself to see how captivating, insightful and creative it truly is! I also love the subtle but extremely funny humour laced throughout this brilliant book as it makes Forbidden an even more enjoyable read. It is, much like its predecessor, very creative I especially liked the creepy reanimated-body auction and the idea of parking spaces as mini shops. I also adored the klepto-fiendsmicro-sized demons with a penance for shiny thingsalong with Mort, the necromancer, who is such a nice and kind person, despite his job of bringing back the dead to work as slaves, but we get a very good insight into his back-story, which makes you extremely sympathetic towards him.

Ive come to love Riley so much shes likeable, funny and down-to-earth, as well as being a really strong character, especially now shes orphaned. Every single character in Forbidden is utterly unique, the vast majority realistic and most are surprisingly complex. The cover is stunningly striking, and I love the gorgeous blue flames that perfectly match the eyes of Riley (and how drastically pale she has become), along with the fact that the style of Forsaken has been kept itll be a lovely series to collect.

However, I really didnt like Simon, Rileys saintly boyfriend who is barely recovering from the tragic demon attack at the Tabernacle, especially when he gets snappy with Riley, and Im surprised that she still wanted to be with him for some time. Im not sure if I like the accents showing up in the characters (namely Beck and his Southern drawl and Stewarts Scottish tongue) speech, though it does make for more realistic, if annoying, reading. Also, I was a bit confused by the whole Holy Water scam and didnt properly understand how it worked, but it was probably just me. I was so glad to get an explanation as to how demons infiltrated earth, which was my only complaint about the first book, and the explanation was very surprising and revealing.

Forbidden is full of suspense as to who stole Rileys fathers body, how the demons managed to break in at the Trapper Meeting and what exactly Ori is up to; combine that with brilliant writing and fantastic characters and you have yourself a real page-turner of a spectacular novel.
