SD was fascinating! I was overwhelmed at the number of books related to SD history, including the viewpoints of the settlers, Native Americans, and National Park Service. What are the best books about SD? Can be nonfiction or any fiction genre.  Thanks for your help.

Giants in the Earth, by Ole Rølvaag, is a classic of the Dakota Territory.  Rølvaag was a professor at St. Olaf's College "way back when", and wrote a moving account of the Norwegian immigrant's experience out upon the prairie, in those pioneer days.   Most readers savor this book . . . .

Thanks for the recommendation, Bonnie. The only copy in the system is the Norwegian version.  I'll have to check some other sites.

I really liked Black Hills by Dan Simmons. It's fiction dealing with Mt Rushmore.

Thanks Michelle. I checked it out, and it's a MAB, so I ordered it for a credit.  Woo hoo!
