Specter of the past takes place 10 years after the events in Timothy Zahn's the Last Command.
Leia, who is vacationing on Wayland, discovers a datacard that reveals that certain Bothans had helped the Emperor sabotage the peaceful world of Caamas, leading to that planet's total destruction. Thing is, the datacard is so damaged the names are unreadable, and rabble rousers start seeking the destruction of all Bothans because of the crimes of a few. Then to make matters worse among all the Republic's infighting, rumor has it that the Imperial Warlord Thrawn has appeared. Then pirate ships are found to have clone crewers, and a mysterious alien ship no one has ever seen before is sighted trying to give a message, but to who: the imperials or the republic? Thing couldn't get much worse. The smuggler Talon Karrde and crew attempt to find the names of the culprits who helped destroy Caamas before a full blown Galactic war starts. Luke goes to investigate the clone pirate crewers, and stumbles upon a connection to the empire. Mara goes searching for the identity mysterious alien ship, and ends up going missing. And Leia is struggling to hold the New Republic together while still having time for her family. Another well written book by Zahn that most should like. Recommened for ages 11 and up as younger children may not understand certain technical science fiction ideas.
