I devoured this series way back when I was in high school. Though the books are considered "adult," I would place them firmly in the "young adult" category -- specifically targeting teen-aged boys.
This book, and the series in general, is full of literal puns. As a teenager, I thought they were brilliant; reading the books now... I find them, uh, lame. Not much hack-and-slash type of action, but lots of magic powers, quests, fantasy creatures, and the occasional sophomoric sex scene.
A very light fantasy read that's a nice change of pace from the deeper stuff, but don't plan on getting too enamored with series. Unless you're under the age of 18.

Had read this book as an adolescent and was rereading for youth appropriateness check before giving it to a friend's son. It was simpler than I remember, but a decent read nonetheless. There was a rape hearing, but nothing illicit was described. Sex occurred at the end of the book, but was fairly harmless, just a mention.
Fun, fast-paced, and full of imagination! I loved every thrilling moment and there are one after another. The writing is intelligent and yet quick-witted to appeal to all intellect.
