Grade 5 continues to build on the two-stage approach to spelling: phonetics, as is used almost exclusively in the younger grades; and structure, the chief emphasis in the upper grades. Spelling by structure involves an understanding of the work-building patterns of the language: learning the root words of word families and then adding prefixes and suffixes. By applying a few rules that are taught, the student will soon know how to spell each word in the word family, and by this method he can increase his spelling vocabulary rapidly.
The lesson format with Parts A-D matches Grade 4. At the back of the book is a "Speller Dictionary" containing the New Words, Review Words, and Subject Words.
The teacher's edition is a workbook with answers and annotations in color. It includes a section with additional instructions for each lesson, and test sentences.« less
