This is the first book I bought and was surprised to find an entire world that I had unexpectedly stumble on thinking this was part of a different series.
The illustrations and directions by the spook are great! It is what made me determinedly set out to find this series. In the series the Spook loses his house and the most precious legacy was his library to entrust to the next Spook in order to fight darkness. So he rebuilds. Here's his opening statement to the reader:
"My name is John Gregory. What follows is my Bestiary - my personal account of the denizens of the dark I've encountered, together with the lessons I have learned and the mistakes I have made. I have held nothing back, and my hope is that the spook who follows me will continue to keep this record of the practical ways in which we deal with the dark."
