I thought it quite good and I usually hate spy stories. Not sure I will ever want to reread it, but I'm looking forward to the next one. |

It was a great story just not enough romance for me either. I want to read her next one as well..even if it has the same low romance factor. |

I agree, I didn't understand all the hype. I had a hard time finishing it and the heroine got on my nerves a bit. |

Muah-ha-ha... I just got My Lord and Spymaster at Borders today. About 3 chapters in and I'm loving it. It's good. Of course, I loved the first one too, so... |

Ok, getting ready to call it a night and I've read to chapter 14 - nearly halfway there. I'm really liking this so far, and I think I've got a handle on what it is I like about her books. They aren't perfect; I think some of her dialogue is just a tad jarring, but she shows a lot of long term promise, IMO. I like the emphasis on the "spy story" aspect myself, and I'll tell ya why - I like action/adventure romances particularly. Plot driven in equal measure with the romance. I don't generally care for "spy" stories so much, but books more like Celeste Bradley's spy stuff come to mind, and they're really a very pale shadow comparitively. Bourne's heroines, IMO, aren't silly little fribbles making stupid decisions in the process of asserting their <insert annoying lisp> independence. As irritating as they may be, they are strong and resourceful women, driven by need, desperation, external forces, to do the things they do, be those things stupid or not. They trust themselves because they've had to, and that comes through clearly in their character development. Lord save me from a nincompoop heroine who knows she can trust the hero, yet does this stupid thing because she can't bear to give up a scrap of her autonomy - or God forbid, can't risk telling him her deep, dark secret. It might as well be the same dreary story of her refusing to marry him for similar reasons, and <yawn>, I can live without that:P Oh, and by the way, if anyone thought Spymaster's Lady was a bit dry in the romance category, this one is different, I think. I didn't find it so myself, but I can allow that the romance got off to a somewhat slow start. Not the case with this one - that's all I'm gonna say:P |

I love strong heriones, but I thought it was a bit much that she continually tried to run away. Especially since she couldn't see. I think that is what bothered me the most. |

Well, I'm somewhat annoyed. I finished My Lord and Spymaster tonight, and it was a near miss. I'd say a solid B/4 stars. Really good on the external plot stuff, not so hot on the romance. Initially, it was great, by Chapter 15-16 she had everything all torqued up & ready to snap, and then it just kinda hovered in place there for the next ten freaking chapters:P I'd finish one, and think okaaay... any time now... aaaany time now... and it just never really got better. Great, engrossing story, but you can't quite get lost in it. The plot kept my interest right up to the end, but to be perfectly frank about it, when the H&H finally, finally, at looooong friggin' last, get around to putting all of that marvelous tension she has firmly in place before the halfway point to good use, and actually have sex, it was a bit of a letdown for me. Not blah exactly, but still, not quite the earth-shattering event all of that dithering around seemed to call for. Still good - romantic, sweet - overall, and I really did like the story, but it's not quite as good as I think she's capable of. I think she's a very talented writer. Her narrative is positively brilliant in places, but she really needs to work on her pacing & her dialogue, and balancing the internal & external. She was all focused on the details like her heroine speaking and expressing herself just so, but the net result really of all that struggle was that less than half of her dialogue really came across as natural. I wanted to research words & expressions for historical accuracy, and when you get the average reader - and not the armchair historians:P - to that point, you've jerked them out of the story good and hard, & made them realize they were reading. The really good books - keepers - are the ones that make you forget the kids & laundry & dinner. I read all day, but I also managed to get the laundry done and get everyone fed on time:P Last Edited on: 7/2/08 10:56 PM ET - Total times edited: 1 |

It was so bad, I had a hard time finishing. I just wanted it to be over! Don't think I'll read any more of hers. |

I don't doubt that a lot of people feel that way, and I can't really blame them. She has great talent, but she's so almost in what she's doing with it:P And y'know, I said I liked the strength & capability of her heroines, and that's true, but it is sorta ridiculous that the heroes are either smarter & that much more capable, or the heroines turn sorta dumb & helpless in their presence:P Annique from Spymaster's Lady not as much so as Jess from My Lord & Spymaster, but both of them had to be rescued by the hero more than once, and if you're to lend the author any credibility at all, it's almost like they wouldn't or never did need rescuing until after they met the heroes. You gotta wonder what's up with that. Last Edited on: 7/6/08 1:26 AM ET - Total times edited: 1 |
