It's kind of like watching a train wreck sometimes.

Well, the thread about books written by presidential candidates got pretty sickening.

Really, I'll go look when I have a minute.  I have, literally, not even peeked into that thread.  It wasn't something that caught my interest.

You have to go through a couple of pages to get to the part where the "marriage is between a man and woman", because the Bible says so, etc.   It all started with Huckabee and his beliefs and went downhill from there.

The bigotry people use the bible to justify sickens me.

I just dont understand why people feel the need to run each other's lives.  "You can't do this because Holy Book X says its wrong", but not everyone follows Holy Book X.  If someone tried to make laws for all Americans based on the Koran or the Torah, people would be up in arms.  But its actually considered a reasonable argument if the countries laws "go against the Bible".  I don't really care what religious people do, think or say, provided they leave me alone.  Why can't they extend everyone else the same courtesy?

I'm continually amazed at how some people are so clueless as to how much they come off looking like jerks.

Maybe  I'm just spoiled, living in a liberal part of the country, surrounded by liberal friends of many colors, persuasions and orientations.  But I swear to God, when I read some of this stuff, I can't believe how downright *ignorant* many of the posters here come across.

The internet opens portals I closed long ago, moved away from, and sealed from my memory.  Maybe I just need to close the portals.

I just despise that "hate the sin, love the sinner" routine. I always feel like they are equating being gay with other sins - like murder or something. Would they spout the same thing about a murderer, pedophile, drug lord? UGH!

With some of them, I'm sure that's exactly what they are doing.

Oh, I don't know. I find much of what they write quite educational and even inspiring.  That whole Huckabee part of the thread was particularly inspiring.....

I just sent Hillary a hundred of my hard-earned bucks.

PS -- and I just might send Obama another hundred.

Good for you, Karen!  I *so* feel the same way.  It just spurs me to do more for the Democratic party, and heck, I'm not even a Dem!!

Ok - so what I don't understand is this - what the heck is the "sin" supposed to be?  Sodomy?  Oral sodomy?  As if millions of heteros don't practice both on a daily basis...

me/bang, bang bang <------ head on wall

I don't even go to CMT anymore.  I just get too upset. I feel that I'm not going to change anyone's mind on a thread, so I just avoid the whole thing.  I do all my preaching to folk that  I can change by setting an example of how I live my life.

That cultural thread is out of control.  It's prejudice with a capital P, but is allowed to continue.  WTH?!?!

I dont think its the whole forum. I think its a few people who continually say offensive things to get a rise and then people give them the reaction they wanted. There are even a few who seem to post threads to get a rise out of specific people and it seems to always work. Then of course there are the finger waggers. The ones that claim to want everything to be peace and love and puppy farts and kittin piddle. "Why can't we all just get along people." "You shouldnt say those things." "When things like this get heated they should just delete them."

Personally the finger waggers get on my nerves more than the trolls do cause the finger waggers are passive aggressive. They dont have anything to say unless someone else starts a controversy. I have no time for people who cant form their own opinions and thoughts so therefore have to use someone elses drama to get attention.

I also figure Im never gonna change a mind if its closed so I dont push too hard to do it. If someone seems genuinely interested in something then I will try to help them see my POV. But people who have a history of starting shit (sorry it fits so well) dont even garner my attention anymore. I see threads posted by them and they sorta just fade into the background. After all if you dont feed their need for drama they will go away. It may take a while but it does work.

That sounds really harsh. Im not even in a bad mood tonight

Vanessa, I am with you all the way!

Honestly, I haven't opened any of the political threads in CMT, so I had no idea that any of this was going on until I read this thread.

Just know that there's someone else here who finds using the Bible to put down others a deplorable action.  None of us have a 1-800 number to the Lord, so when I hear people talk about what the Lord wants in reference to putting down others, it infuriates me.  I personally believe that the Lord wants me to be a good person and to treat EVERYONE well.  How can someone preach hatred, yet consider themselves a good and religious person?  I will never understand that.

As it is my first time posting in this forum, I will add that I have many friends and a family member who are gay and lesbian.  I find it horrible that people want to deny them the same love and happiness that those in "traditional" relationships have.  How anyone can judge people based on who they love--and then try to make it about God and the Bible--well, that just makes my stomach turn.

Now there's a damned thread with someone being offended by a lesbian mystery book (Fingersmith by Sarah Waters).  She didn't know it was "that" kind of book and wished she'd had some kind of  warning.  God (rolling eyes).  I told myself I wasn't going to visit the forums anymore.  I hardly "speak" anyways.  But I do enjoy it sometimes.  Even if I mostly just read.  But with all the whining going on, people who seem incapable of thinking for themselves, and a helluva lot of judgements passed all over the place, visiting the forums can be such a downer.  Sometimes I read threads and wonder why people make such mountains out of mole hills.

*sigh*

I should probably follow my own advice and ignore the offending ______ (whatever) and not pass judgement.

But sometimes you just feel like slapping some sense into people.  ;)

The "culture thread" is one I backed out of as soon as I saw what the original poster said.  The only reason to say something like that is to start a fight.  Now I don't mind a debate where you talk about things rationally.  But that wasn't going to happen in that thread.

But on the bright side, the thread on Outlander taught me that that book has a homoerotic s&m scene.

Chloe, what's so stupid about that thread is I had no idea what the book was about until she posted it.  I Googled it, and wishlisted it.  It looks like a good book!  Form the way she was talking I thoght maybe it had incest in it or something - then I found out what it was and I couldn't believe that was what the fuss was all about. <eyeball roll>

Kari, I agree with your assessment of that other thread.  There is no intelligent discourse with most of these people - I don't know why I keep expecting there to be.  Like Chris, I have learned to ignore certain posters.  I slipped up this week, but won't make that mistake again.
