When you start a new series, do you:

buy them all (or quite a few) and read them back to back

or

read one and then decide if you like them?

I've got a couple of series I'm thinking about starting but I'm so terrible about wanting the next book immediately if I like it.   One series I know I want to start is Nalini Singh's angel series.

I used to wait until i had all the books in a series until i read it. Well...all the ones released up until that point anyway. But i dont do that anymore. More than once i ran into to these problems...i either hated the first one, or i lost interest after the first couple of books. Then i had all these others stashed away that i needed to get rid of now.

I think it's a double-edged sword.  If I read the first book in a series and LOVE it, then I am in a mad scramble to get my hands on every single one ASAP.  However, if I acquire a bunch of books in a series without knowing if I like it, I often end up not even wanting to bother, or they turn out to be not so good.  I would read one (or at least start it) before glomming the rest, but then I've been in a conservative book mood lately.  I'm trying to weed out, not add a bunch!  lol

Each book costs you 3 bucks. If you get all three and hate the first one, you lose 6 bucks. Now your cheap book swap isn't so cheap.

I get one at a time. I did take Mary's advice and wishlist them as soon as they come out, but I put that title on hold until I finish the one before. Also, a LOT of them have been coming through at the digital library and it frustrates me to have a hard copy here and then have access to a free e-copy.

I'll also wishlist things just in case, but I don't have a huge wishlist so that's easy. These days I'm also pretty conservative. I much prefer ebooks and so many are avialble via the library or free, and I have so many paper books to get through.

Alright then, let me ask this:   Nalini Singh's angel series = glom or buy one at a time?  I loved her Psy series.

Buy them all!! I love Nalini lol

I read the first and then if I loved it get the rest. I rarely buy books unless it's by an author I know I love. Otherwise I wait to get it on here.

Now see thats a whole 'nother thing i think. If i LOVE one series by a certain author, and im looking to start another series by that same author then i will go ahead and get the whole set. I just cant help myself then.

my 2 cents worth is it depends on the series - many series are too intense/silly/violent etc to read close together- the more complex the world the author creates = easier to understand if you read 1 book after another (i.e. JR Wards "black dagger" brotherhood)

re: angel series ....the first few books are great - suggest you read these 2 together that revolve around Eleana and the Archangel -Angels' Blood (Guild Hunter, Bk 1) and Archangel's Kiss (Guild Hunter, Bk 2)

the 3rd is better than most series but not as great as 1 and 2 (Archangel's Consort (Guild Hunter, Bk 3))(can buy or get at library)

I've started getting 1 at a time now.  I usually can't read a series start to finish at once anyway.  Collecting multiples of series that I hadn't even tried yet is how I ended up with 1100 books and no where to put them.

So now: If it's an author I love then I am more inclined to get multiples of a series of theirs that I haven't read yet.  If it's a new to me author: then I get book 1 and only book 1 to start and I try to read the first chapter or two on Amazon or Googlebooks if I can first unless the library has it then I just check out book 1.

See if you can read the fist chapter online somewhere. That'll help you decide.

Thanks Mary.  As often as I read ebooks I hadn't even thought about reading the first chapter.  Most Nook books will let you do that now.

Sherri, go get all of the Angel series, you won't be dissappointed. :-)  I read the first book in the BDB series and went bought every book I could get my hands on used. But normally I will grab the first book in the series and then if I like it, go get the rest. I will also go wishlist a series that I haven't read and after I read that first book and I like it, then I leave the WL in place, if I don't I just go remove them from my WL>

I like to try out a first book in a series to see how I will like it . I don't like to rush through a series though, I alternate books/series/genres. This way I don't burn out on a series, and I also have another book by a favorite author to look forward to.

Jeannie, I try to do that as well. Depends on the series for me. I read Kresley Cole's IAD series back to back, I read the first novella and went and bought every book in the series and had them all read in less than two weeks.  As well as Nalini Singh's Psy series, also had those all bought and read withina short time.  Her Angel's series I am trying to savor as well as the BDB series, I am up to book 5 and fighting with myself not to read them one right after the other.

Keri - I start to panic when I am nearing the end of the series (or at least the end of the books out so far). I read the first nine of Lara Adrian's Midnight Breed series, because I just had to read Hunter's story. Now there is only one book left, so I am waiting as long as I can to read it. I'm dying to know what happened to Chase and how it all ends, but then it will be over! frown

Jeannie - I've heard that there will be at least three more Breeds books and that Mira's story is next.  Not sure if that's true or how long we'll have to wait, but there's hope that it's not the end!

Thanks Michelle - I'm thilnking it might be a Mira and Kellan story, I thought they were cute together in Deeper than Midnight (Hunter and Corinne). Right now I am reading Dragon Bound by Thea Harrison. I bought 3 of the books at the Barnes and Noble sale based on all the rave reviews. I don't normally do that, but I had a good feeling about it, and I was right. Love the book (halfway thruogh) and I am glad there are more books to read in the series. Going to try and pace myself - I think it's Archangel's Consort after this...

I'm actually going to try and become one of those that reads all or most of a series at once. I keep losing track of them.  But now I am holding off on acquiring even 1 book of a lot of series until I finish some up.  I'm slowly converting my WL here to series I've already started, non-fiction and audiobooks and putting 1st in a series books  on my RL instead.  For series I own that are all WL-I WL the ones I'm missing but put them on hold until I know I like them or not.  I have some that have been on hold since they added that feature because I haven't gotten around to starting them yet.  I just move them my RL if they stop being WL books.

I ended up buying the prequel for the nalini singh series plus I have the first book.  With my discount at Diesel ebooks, it was $2 which I can accept.  (3.99 without the discount which is absurd).   Going to start that series sometime this weekend I think.

Sherri, after you posted that on GR's I went and looked that program up. That is a pretty good deal, so I am going to join up when I get home tonight.

My sister would give me books in a series alot, & I started insisting she not give them to me until the series was completely published, cause I got annoyed at not having the end.  But these were fantasy not L&R.  Most of the L&R series are shifting from 1 couple to another and the story arc is not as central, so on those I don't mind only having some.

So it depends on the type of book..... and I am also less insistent about it cause I do have way too many books to read........

I agree about not getting all of them before starting & don't even have them on my list until I decide I like the author enough.

I still want to wait for the whole series for TV shows.  Don't get me started on another TV show that you are going to decide to cancel when I start liking it.

Just an FYI, all her angel novellas are in her new book Angel's Flight. She is an automatic buy for me so I bought it and then realized that only one was a new story lol
