Alright... I tried and finally managed to get through Taliesin by Mr. Lawhead. I will say that I thoroughly enjoyed most of the first 3/4 of the book. The last quarter was just FAR too preachy and it made it hard to get through. What I really want to know is if Hood is the same way. If it is, I'll skip it. If not, I'm looking forward to being able to finish the book without feeling like I've been to a sermon.

I don't know about Hood, but Merlin is much better than Taliesin in my opinion.  I think it is the best of his "Arthur" series.

Is it as heavy with the religious stuff?

I didn't like Lawhead's Pendragon Cycle too well, but I did like Hood very much. No, no preaching. Here are my reviews.

I went ahead and read Hook and Scarlet. Loved both of them. :)
