I requested a book about a week ago. I was never marked by the member. They sent me an email sometime towards the end of th week to see if i still wanted it and asked for my address. I thought this was kinda strange but I emailed them back saying yes i did want the book and gave them my address. Since then I have heard nothing and the book request remains unmarked. I sent a pm this week but have heard nothing back.

What do I do in this situation? I want this book for my son to read, he keeps asking me when it will arrive. Can I cancel and order from someone else? Just not sure what to do as this is the first problem I have run into since joining PBS.

If you still have the option button to "cancel" this transaction, the mailing label has not been printed yet.  Is this a new member?  If so, they could be confused and mailed incorrectly.

The transaction should time out after about 5 days (I think it's 5) and roll over into the next member offering that book.  If you cancel the transaction, you will loose your place in line if it's wishlisted.  Also if you cancel and re-order, you may be directed back to the same non-responsive member and merely start again.  So best to just let the transaction time out, which removes the book from the other person's bookshelf.

Pam - odds are the request you are seeing is NOT with the person who contacted you. After 5 days, PBS cancels the order and moves your request to the next person. The only reason they would need to contact you for an address via PM is if they no longer had a request from you, otherwise they'd just need to print the label.  (you can verify this by hitting the PM button on the active transaction and seeing who the member is on that transaction, you should also see an cancelled transaction in your TA from the PMing member)

I would suggest PMing this person back and asking if the book was indeed in the mail. If it is not, then you do not want them to mail it as you have already had one re-requested through the PBS system. Make it clear that if the post date is after the date of your PM, you will not mark the book received through your Transaction Archive and they will not get credit. If it is in the mail, you might want to cancel that active request.

Ok, thanks very much. I now understand. I see that the book request is now on its third request (three different people). First was on 9/19, moved to second on 9/25 and then the third on 10/01. I will PM the first person who originally asked my for my address to see if it was ever sent.

Thanks very much.

I would cancel that pending request.  They could accept and print while you are waitign for this other person to respond to your PM. Then you will end up with 2 copies of the book.  Now technically you would not have to give the 1st person a credit. But since they PM'd you and you said you wanted the book-they could complain to PBS if you don't. If you cancel the 2nd request (or 3rd actually) they will still keep their place in FIFO and will get your request if you reorder (assuming it hasn't been ordered by someone else by then)

They must have accepted the request and then let it time out without marking it mailed. Otherwise I don't think it shows up in your TA. Maybe it does for the requestor. I have never let one time out.  But I know when I request a book and it's never accepted, I don't see that unaccepted, timed out one in my TA.  I only see them if they were accepted and then not marked mailed.

I just dont get this, this request has gone thru three people so far, now sitting at the current book owner for 3 days, 2 more before the request is sent to someone else. This is frustrating.
