The classic treatment of the Huns, translated by Frederick Martens. "They were looked upon as demons of the sandy pit, as sorcerers, as monsters in human guise. Or, rather, near-human, for their fur garments, their flattened, yellow faces and slitlike eyes, their look of squat, clumsy beasts, raised doubts as to whther they really were members of the human race. They seemed more akin to bear and wolf; and they spoke no intelligible tongue, uttering yelping, snarling sounds, fragments of long-forgotten dialects." A wonderfully told history. No index or bibliography.
