Well ... the author's kinda strange, and rides a train through most, though not all, of the book! The smoking comes into play as she pretty much only socializes with the folks she meets in the smoking car (or on smoke breaks). The flashbacks to her dysfunctional past in Britain didn't add much for me, but I'd be interested in reading another of her books.
