Well, I've been reading some more, and I'm at the point where I can't put it down!  But I had to!!

I've decided to read it while I ride my exercise bike; it keeps me on the darn thing for 30 min.!! LOL..

I loved both books.  They each got a rare 5 out of 5 stars from me!

Bonnie!  Good to see you...I think I owe you an email!  ;)

If you like Alice Hoffman, I think you'll like Garden Spells.  I'm enjoying Sugar Queen, but I had to just let go of my disbelief and flow with the storyline.  I can do that now, cause I'm on vacation and very relaxed!  Let me know when you read them...

I really enjoyed Garden Spells. I actually bought it new and read it in 2 days and it went out the very next day! I'm excited to get The Sugar Queen next

Oh...I read until I fell asleep last night; I have about 50 pages to go, maybe a bit more.  I have a sneaking suspiscion about what may be happening here....

I would say if you liked Garden Spells, you'll like this one too.  It's really a quick read.  (And for those who are really paying attention, yes, I know I said I was only going to read it while I exercised.  I couldn't take it.  I gave in about 10 pm last night and picked it up again!)

I agree about the book thing...like I said, I really had to suspend my disbelief and not think about it too much.  I like the way Alice Hoffman does "magic" much better.  But it was a quick, fun read.  I certainly didn't feel like I had wasted the time...like I do with some books! LOL

Loved Garden Spells.  Can't wait to read this one.  I'm in the 30s on the WL for it.

Hannah, I felt just the same way.  I was a little skeptical in the first part.  But by the end, I was hooked.  I do think I liked Garden Spells a litte more, but Erin, when you get Sugar Queen and read it, you'll have to let us know what you thought!  (I laughed at your ladder comment...oh yeah! I can relate!)

I think I should have read her first novel first...after reading this I don't think I will...but then again everyone says it's better...hmmm

what is Garden Spells about?

Garden Spells is about a young woman who runs a catering business; but of course, she has a magical touch.  If someone is trying to heal a broken heart, she knows just what ingredients to include to help them along.   She lives in the family home, quite content with her life, or so she believes....until her sister breezes back into town with her daughter and trouble close behind.   Not to mention the hunk that moves in next door...

There is one character, an aunt, who at times feels compelled to give people something.  She doesn't know why....but eventually, they always need whatever she has given them.  (I liked it (this plot device) better than the books just showing up!)

sounds interesting. it also sounds a little like that movie with Sarah michelle Gellar where she is the cook. I'm sure it's a different story all together, but your description just reminded me of it...maybe I'll have to give it a chance :)

I read Garden Spells today. LOVED IT! Read it while waiting for my son at a car show..he doesn't have his full driver's license yet so I have to tag along. The book was great. I will put Sugar Queen on my TBR.

I just couldn't get into The Sugar Queen. I would read a bit, put it down and then try to pick it up again. It just didn't have the same "pull" as Garden Spells.

Anna, I know what you mean.  I was really questioning the whole idea...but I did manage to get through, and I liked it, in the end.  But not as much as Garden Spells.
