My cousin is in 3rd grade, and she just got into reading. She read the whole Diary of a Wimpy Kid series and I would like to give her some books that are similar or a bit more challenging. Her mom asked me not to get her anything below the 5th grade reading level. Can anyone offer some suggestions? She is into pop culture, not so much fantasy (i.e. vampire books, Harry Potter). Loves animals and is very feminine. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Here are a few suggestions from my bookshelf, that my daughter enjoyed: Selene Goes Home; Max: The Dog Who Refused to Die; Titanic If I have any you could use, I'll be glad to send you 3/2 credits, or 5/3. Just let me know.

I wouldn't go with Junie B Jones or any of the Rainbow Fairies series. I imagine she would devour them in one day. I would suggest any from Margaret Peterson Haddix. My 6th grader LOVES HER!

Any of the Ramona books by Beverly Cleary are good too.
