Hello!!  =)

I run a book club and we usually read whatever is on the bestsellers list.  Recently one of the members of my group who happens to be hosting our October meeting requested that we read something "scary" for October.  The general concensus of the group is that we want to read a mystery/thriller type of novel not a novel with a lot of blood and guts.  I have been trying to find just the right book but a lot of the books I come across are series.  I just want to find a good whodunit/edge of your seat thriller book to read for our group.

Do any of you have any suggestions on a book??

Thank you so much!!

Ooooh, you could try "Still Waters" by Nigel McCrery.  The first four or five pages of that book are about as creepy as I've read in a long time!  Or if you want something with a little paranormal flair, you could try "Remains of the Dead" by Wendy Roberts.  This one features Sadie Novak, crime scene cleaner.  You'll learn all you ever wanted to know about bodily fluids once a person dies.  The twist at the end is quite unexpected as well.

My suggestions are:

Cabinets of Curosities - Preston and Chld. Does have a series character, but can be read as a standalone with no problem. (creepy and scary)

Amazonia - James Rollins(a one armed soldier goes into the Amazon and comes out with two arms...very scary!)

Heart Shaped Box - Joe Hill (bad, bad ghost)

Midnight Mass - F. Paul Wilson (a lone priest against a coven of bad vampires)

Deviant Ways - Chris Mooney (an ex-fbi profiler against a bad serial killer)

I jsut read River of Darkness by Rennie Airth.  Not super blood and guts but the serial killer in it was really scary in the seems normal but is really a homicidal maniac kind of way.  It's a historical though, takes place just after WWI.  It's also a series book but it's the 1st of a series of 3.  And I'm not sure they're super connected as series books anyway because there's a long time between when each takes place.

I suggest either City of Masks or Land of Echoes by Daniel Hecht. City of Masks is the first one in the Cree Black series. Cree is a paranormal investigator, but these books are no cute cozies. They are dark, atmospheric and tense. Hecht writes very well, and each book has an amazing sense of place. I actually got real goosebumps! Hmm, I am talking myself into this too! May I will reread City of Masks in October. ;-)

Don't know if you're still looking, but "Tell No One" by Harlan Coben is amazing! Also, I agree with the "Heart-Shaped Box" suggestion--it's a great book!

The October book on the Classics forum last year was a selection of Edgar Allan Poe stories. We had a good time discussing them!
