Book #23 in the "In Death" Series. I liked this one, I'd say its better than average, and the average in this series is pretty damn good.

Eve is called to the scene when an entire family is slaughtered cleanly and professionally in their beds - never even waking to see their killers...top notch security system, nice neighborhood, squeeky clean life hints at no motive or enemies...and now the killers know that they missed one - one accidental survivor, a nine-year old girl, who called the police and crawled through her parents blood to hide.

Eve Dallas finds the girl and while promising her she'll find the killers and the reasons why...she and Rourke struggle to put some distance between this traumatized girl and their memories of their own traumatized pasts. They take the young witness into their own home to keep her as safe as they can.

The killers are organized, well-funded, seemingly military trained and equipped with patience and cunning...and now they know that the cops have the surviving witness...and that the job isn't finished.

What has this group of cold killers got against one little girl and her family?

This one was much better than the others - more of a plot and less of a romance novel.

In her newest novel in the series, Nora Roberts, aka J.D. Robb, returns to the New York City of 2059 - where Leiutenant Eve Dallas struggles to solve the murder of a seemingly ordinary family, and protect one small, terrified survivor. Kid's are not Dallas' strong point but she steps up to the plate and provides the child a safe place to stay - with her. She makes a promise to the child that she will find the killer and bring him to justice. Her involvement in the case unearths some of her own darketst memeories and deepest fears. I liked the pace of the book and found myself ignoring all my evening chores to sit down and read !

I always enjoy the Eve Dallas mysteries and this was no exception. This one tells of the trauma of a young girl witnessing her parents murders and the affection that Eve's hard core husband, Roarke, and sometimes snide butler, Summerset, develop for the child.

Another J.D. Robb in the "Death" series. Involves a child, which gets to Eve very deeply.

The abridged version still maintains the basic crime story, but loses most of the character motivations and reactions that allow the recurring characters to develop that you get with the unabridged version. Either version, the story is one of my favorites of the J.D.Robb series.

Lieutenant Eve Dallas struggles to solve the murder of a seemingly ordinary family, and protect one small, terrified survivor.
No affairs. No criminal connections. No DNA. No clues. Eve Dallas may be the best cop in the city--not to mention having the lavish resources of her husband Roarke at her disposal--but the Swisher case has her baffles. The family members were murdered in their beds with brutal, military precision. The state-of-the-art security was breached, and the killers used night vision to find their way throught the cozzy middle-class house. Clearly, Dallas is dealing with pros. The only mistake they made was to overlook the nine-year-old girl cowering in the dark in the kitchen...
Now Nixie Swisher is an orphan--and the sole eyewitness to a seemingly inexplicable crime. Kids are not Dallas's strong suit. But Nixie needs a safe place to stay, and Dallas needs to solve the case. Not only because of the promise she made to Nixie. Not only for the cause of justice. But also to put to rest some of her own darkest memories--and deepest fears. With her partner Peabody on the job, and watching her back--and with Roarke providing the kind of help only he can give--Lieutenant Eve Dallas is running after shadows, and dead-set on finding out who's behind them.

If you don't care for Nora Roberts BUT love Mystery/Dark Thrillers with a side of romance and a dash of comedy - then I think you'll love J.D. Robb's ... In Death series written by Nora Roberts alter ego.

I won't go into the details of the books but will tell you this: Superb character development, continuity of the story line (which means you really need to read the books in order although they can stand alone) is top notch, the relationships that are webbed and weaved together throughout each page are phenomenal and let's the reader 'really' get to know the characters.

Here's a list of all the books in order (I'm leaving off the 'In Death' part):

I thought Survivor in Death was just OK. There were moments when I laughed out loud and got misty-eyed, but I felt somewhat dissatisfied with the story as a whole. Eve seemed very cold to me. I understand due to her childhood, she'd have a hard time dealing with a kid victim. At times though, she seemed a bit heartless and that not the Eve I've come to learn. The normal camaraderie between everyone didn't feel as genuine this time. I didn't really care for the mystery either. I didn't like the idea behind the killings nor the fact that the killers were tied to groups from previous books. The ending seemed a bit contrived and convenient. I hope the next one is better.

I love powerful Lt. Eve Dallas and how the complex New York City crimes are solved. If you don't wanna bite her husband, don't read these books! Nora Robert's best writing is as JD Robb in this "In Death" series of some 30+ stories to date. I collect all of the JD Robb books, but skip the Roberts, whose stories are not as tight as those about Lt. Eve Dallas - ass kicker! If the future of New York City is like this, I fear these futuristic killers who are sneaky and complex.

Lt. Eve Dallas is called to the Swisher Residence. The family members have been murdered in their beds. The youngest child, Nixie Swisher, is an eyewitness. Eve and her detectives are looking for clues. Why was this family targeted? How was the security breached? And why will the killers do anything to get their hands on nine year old Nixie? When Eve takes her only witness home with her, Child Protective Services are not happy. But Eve knows the killers will find it nearly impossible to breach the security that Roarke has on their home.

This is another excellent addition to the Eve Dallas series. The murders are shocking and the clues are few. As usual, the story takes a backseat to the characters. The interaction between Eve, Roarke and Nixie was first-rate. Eve and Roarke have no idea how to handle a nine year old girl, especially one that is grieving for her family. The whole cast of supporting characters make an appearance in this book and help solve the mystery of who killed the Swisher family. My rating: 4.5 Stars.

In the 20th fine volume of Roberts's futuristic mystery franchise, police lieutenant Eve Dallas is called in when lawyer Grant Swisher and his family are massacred with eerie skillfulness on the Upper West Side. The only survivor is 10-year-old Nixie, who evadesand witnessesthe killers as she creeps down to the kitchen for a midnight snack. Despite the painful memories of her own childhood that Nixie's presence calls up, Eve decides to hide the girl in the high-tech mansion she shares with her husband, billionaire businessman Roarke. With help from Roarke; her faithful sidekick, Peabody; and others, Eve discovers the existence of a shadowy former military operative with a grudge against Swisherthe lawyer helped the operative's battered wife divorce him right before she disappeared. The relatively early disclosure of the villain's identity and the dearth of other viable suspects dulls the suspense in the first half of the book, but tension escalates toward an absorbing denouement as a trap Eve sets for her target ends up with Nixie as its unintentional bait. Throughout, the series' colorful supporting cast and Eve's prickly personalitysmartly showcased in her power struggles with everything from space-age vending machines to her own pastremain as vividly appealing as ever.
