Has anyone read this?  What did you think?  I got this from the library yesterday and I'll be starting it soon.  I remember reading good reviews and I actually tried to get it through PBS but it was a "jinxed title" for me.  I had one copy go lost in the mail and it timed out two other times before I gave up on it.  That was a while ago though.

Anyhow, if you have an opinion about this book and the subsequent books in this series, I'd love to hear what you thing!

I haven't read it, but as usual when reading your posts LeeAnne, I've added yet another book to my TBR book.  I put it on hold at my library.  I'll let you know what I think of it.

LeeAnne,

This is a very, very, very good series!!!!!  The Various Haunts of Men  is one of the best mysteries I have read in the past 10 years.  If you like police procedurals, you will like this series.  The characters are well thought out.  As the series goes, you will become more and more attached to Simon and his style of police work.

Susan Hill gives you enough information to visualize the scenes, and the crimes, but she is not graphic.  Try it and let me know what you think!

Arrrgh!! I am THIS CLOSE to putting this on hold at my library. My promise to myself not to acquire any more books or begin any new series until I pare down mount TBR  is all that's holding me back. Barely. I will keep an eye on this thread and see if there are more glowing reviews and then more than likely break my vow.

I just finished this book and all I can say is WOW.  Seriously!  If you fancy yourself a reader of mysteries, and British mysteries in particular, you owe it to yourself to read this one.  It is excellent!  Shocking, riveting, beautifully written.  I can't say enough.  I know it won't appeal to everyone but if you like P.D. James and Ruth Rendell, you will definitely enjoy this one.  I'm so glad I thought to check out the second book in the series from the library as well.

Wow.

LeeAnne-

Let me know what you think of the second one.  The ending is different, and many reviews thought it was too unconventional.  I liked it, because if was different.  Think the plot over, and then give yourself a few weeks before you start the third one.  Trust me, it will make it even better.

I bought the fourth one, but have not started it yet.  I plan to take it with me when I go to the in-laws for Thanksgiving.  It will give me something to do, and will help me tune out my mother-in-law's "helpful hints" on how I could be a better person.  And she wonders why I read so many murder mysteries....

Good to see good comments about this, I've got it on my TBR. Probably moving it up a few notches now. :P

Ha!  Thanks for the advice, Deborah!  I'm about 80 pages into book number 2 (I had to do something during my son's piano lesson, don'cha know!) but I'll report back on the ending (I'm intrigued now.  I thought the ending of the first one was pretty unconventional!).  I'll definitely wait on the second one.  Good luck with your MIL!
