Since several people have contacted me about suspicious items not being removed, I thought I would send in feedback for them to see what the background issue is with this. I was asked if I would take the time to address this in the forums.

If you think your posts are being ignored, let us give you a little background on some of them. Some are actually placed in the database by the database origin. Meaning, R&R remove the item, the database gets an update. sees that item missing, and replaces it.

So, what they are focusing on are items that actually have SOMETHING POSTED TO THEM. If there's nothing posted to the listing, there's nothing going to be done with it, it's just going to stay there. They said they are very prompt to remove items from shelves  that are inappropriate listings, they just don't remove the listing itself.

So, basically that means you only need to report suspicious items that actually have something posted. If it says "Order This" there's an item posted, If it says "Post this item" don't worry about it, it's just a spot in the database.

I hope that addresses the concerns people have had about whether or not the Report Suspicious items topic is actually getting any attention. If you have further questions please feel free to PM me, I'll let you know if that was addressed in our conversation, or if you need to go directly to them for a better answer.

Thanks, Sherry for doing the research about this.  I know it has been a question/topic for a long time.

maybe then they should be tagged as "inappropriate listings" so that the next person that has that ISBN doesn't use it. By leaving it on the site it makes others think that it is okay to list.

Just my opinion.

I spent hours for several days listing coloring books and calendars in the "Report Suspicious Items Here"  topic back in August.  They have never been removed and as of today there are 140 coloring books and over 200 calendars posted and available to order. Today, I also did a spot check of items other people listed in that topic (dvds, cds, magazines, plastic bird feeder etc.) the ones I checked are all still posted and available to order. If these items are now acceptable, then the posting rules need to be updated since they call out these items as not being a book and not postable.

I too, just went through some of the things listed as suspicious items.  Interestingly, almost all of the ones I had listed had been removed.  However, most of my listings that I checked were listed without an ISBN, which means that once it's removed, it's gone.

I noticed that the ones that Marie (coolweather) listed have ISBNs.  I spot checked and about half of the items listed with ISBNs have "order this book" buttons.  I wonder if folks are posting to the ISBNs that are not postable, getting their stuff removed, and then reposting it.  Are members notified when something it removed and the reason for it?  If so, what happens if they just repost the item that was removed?

Is the suggestion above about the ISBNs being tagged as unpostable something that could be done?  Is it something that would do any good?

Marie B.

I don't think that Sherry is saying that they are acceptable, just that unless something is posted to the listing, they are not concerned.

Linda R.

If we tag the ones that are no-nos...then when we can search tags, a volunteer can pull then up and report the unpostable listings that have something posted to them.

Sherry,

I think we should tag them, I saw edits come through on some yesterday that were pamphlets. I went ahead and did the edit because either way it is staying in the system, but if it was tagged then we would know that it is a No-no item and let the person know.

Betsy,

What I'm saying is that those items have never been removed. They all have items posted. Sherry said that inappropriate postings are being removed promptly.  Since most of the items that I found and checked on have been there since August, there is a discrepency with the posted rules.

Re-read Sherry's post.  The database is automatically re-entering data.  Also, if people repost them, they show up again.  There is only so much that can be done at one time (PBS is extremely under-staffed - and most of those are volunteers!)   So the team is focusing on removing items that are posted for trade, as they can.  A certain percentage of those are being reposted either by the system or by the swappers, themselves.

Coloring books, calendars, and anything but BOOKS are not swapable on this site.  The rules on that are extremely clear.  The existence of "illegal" items in the database doesn't change the rules.

Betsy, I hadn't thought of using the tags! ! !  I've started tagging what I find as "NOT LEGALLY POSTABLE".  If anyone else has a better wording for the tag, I'll change it.

How about "NOT POSTABLE ON PAPERBACKSWAP"
