This is a terrifying book! If you're on a boat or near the ocean, DON"T read this book, it makes JAWS seem like a children's tale. It is a very long book, but a page-turner. The science and plausibility of events is scary enough, but as events occur, the author reels you into edge of your seat suspense. The science is fascinating and critical to the story, and it allows you to catch your breath, thank goodness, between whirlwinds of terror! This book was added to the list of 1,001 books you must read before you die when the list was updated in 2010-and it is a worthy addition. Excellent reading!

It's a deeply scientific and heavily detailed science fiction story that asks: what if humans weren't the only intelligent life on planet Earth? It's a very good read, but the story drags in places.
